Journal of Nonverbal Behavior - Special Issue on Innovations in Vocal Research

Deadline for submission: April 15, 2024

The Journal of Nonverbal Behavior invites manuscripts for a Special Issue on Innovations in Vocal Research. A recent special issue in the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior (published in 2021) was dedicated to innovations in emotional expression beyond the face due in large part to the dominance of facial expression research in affective science. Yet, the dearth of articles dedicated to the vocal channel (paralanguage) represents another significant gap in the nonverbal literature. The aim of this special issue is to bring together cutting edge empirical and theoretical papers that highlight the significance of the vocal channel of communication. Areas of focus may include person perception, emotion, romantic attraction/mating, deception, laughter, social influence, dominance, status, and vocal modulation. To encourage an interdisciplinary compilation, we welcome contributions from biological anthropology, evolutionary psychology, social psychology, and communication.

All papers must be submitted with a cover letter and cover page indicating that the author(s) wishes the manuscript to be considered for publication in the Special Issue on Innovations in Vocal Research. Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed following standard journal procedures.
