Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings

Special issue on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Academic Medical Centers

JCPMS Guest Editors: Jacquelyn Doxie King, PhD, Whitney Raglin Bignall, PhD Kathleen Lemanek, PhD,

Letter of Intent Deadline: June 1, 2021

Manuscript Submission Deadline:  December 31, 2021

The movement for black lives, social and political unrest, and the highlighting/exacerbation of health disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic has brought diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts to the forefront of many academic medical center settings. Medical centers are in a position to play a unique role in advancing diversity in the workforce; increasing understanding regarding how to effectively work with diverse populations through research, quality improvement, and community partnership; and are positioned to shape the future through education and training.  Given the interdisciplinary dynamics of academic medical center settings, this special issue on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) aims to promote research focused on efforts to increase cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as efforts to narrow and reduce existing health disparities among a variety of disciplines.

This Special Issue on DEI will use the following definitions of cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion as a context for submissions: cultural diversity includes issues of race, indigenous heritage, language, age, country of origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious/spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, ability status, and intersectionality. It also includes knowledge about cultural factors in the delivery of physical and mental health care. Equity includes the process of being treated fairly and impartially. Finally, inclusion includes providing equal opportunity to all people to fully engage themselves in creating an environment and a cultural attitude whereby everyone and every group fits, feels accepted, has value, and is supported by a foundation built on trust and mutual respect.

This Special Issue will include both solicited and invited papers with a range of topics and areas of interest: clinical assessment, treatment, supervision, and program development; training/education, research, advocacy and community engagement.  Submissions will be accepted from disciplines and professions representing children, adolescents, adults and families, such as psychology (clinical, school, community, neuropsychology), psychiatry, and medicine/nursing, attorneys and community liaisons.

Submissions may include qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods articles, as well as quality improvement projects, meta-analytic and systematic reviews, and commentaries. Submissions should be framed within an ecological perspective in terms of how DEI impacts individuals, families, neighborhoods, communities, and society at large, all of which intersect with medical centers.

Authors are asked to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) by June 1, 2021. LOI and questions should be emailed to Dr. Kathleen Lemanek (Kathleen.lemanek@nationwidedchildrens.org (this opens in a new tab)) with subject line JCPMS DEI Special Issue. LOI should be one page and outline the purpose or objectives of the project, methods, planned statistical analyses, and relevance to the special issue with respect to topic or area of interest and to DEI in general. Papers with approved LOI should be submitted to the Guest Editor via the Journal's web-based online manuscript submission and peer-review system: http://jocs.edmgr.com (this opens in a new tab). All submitted papers will undergo peer review before a final decision on publication. Final papers will be due December 31, 2021.
