Aims and scope

Finding a good fit of your work with a journal makes the publication process more efficient. If you are considering publication in JCPMS, please review the following information about the journal’s aims and scope.

The journal’s audience. JCPMS aims to publish research that is relevant to the work of psychologists in academic health centers, medical schools, teaching hospitals, and other medical settings. Published articles reflect the breadth of psychologists’ roles as clinicians, scientists, educators, administrators, and leaders in these settings. While most readers of JCPMS are psychologists, the journal’s contents have broad appeal to psychology as well as other health care disciplines. Submissions from health care disciplines outside of psychology are welcomed and encouraged, provided that the work has clear relevance to the journal’s core audience.

Types of work published. JCPMS publishes research across the translational science spectrum, including basic, preclinical, clinical, health services, and evaluation research. The journal accepts a variety of article types including literature reviews, case studies and case series, observational studies, proof-of-concept studies, clinical trials, theoretical and methodological research, qualitative studies, dissemination and implementation research, and evaluations of programs and policies.

Subject matter coverage. Topics that are considered for publication in JCPMS include:

  • Assessment of outcomes and value of psychological services delivered in hospitals, primary care, specialty medical care, long-term care, community health, and managed care
  • Psychological assessment, consultation, and intervention for people with acute, chronic, and life-threatening medical conditions
  • Diverse topics relating to the practice of behavioral medicine and clinical health psychology
  • Organizational and professional issues for psychologists in academic health centers, medical schools, and healthcare organizations
  • Applications of psychology to promote health equity, patient safety, quality of care, and professional wellbeing
  • Innovations in education and training in medical settings, including interprofessional education

We encourage submissions from a diverse group of researchers, educators, and practitioners in psychology and academic healthcare. JCPMS invites scholarly contributions that address health disparities and those that are relevant to improving health services and outcomes for marginalized groups.

JCPMS welcomes submissions related to primary psychiatric/mental disorders, provided the setting and/or the population are aligned with the aims and scope defined above. For example, topics that would be considered for publication include assessment of mood disorders in the primary care setting, behavioral consultation on the critical care unit, and treatment of phobias related to medical procedures. We assign lower priority to work that focuses primarily on management of mental disorders in traditional psychiatric or behavioral health delivery settings.

Pre-submission inquiries are welcome but are not required.
