The Journal of Cultural Economics, with the support of the Association of Cultural Economics International (ACEI) and Springer, opens a Call for Papers for a Special Issue on “Talent and Technology in Creative Industries” to be published in 2024. The Guest Editors of the issue will be Ricard Gil (Queen’s University, Canada), Abraham Ravid (Yeshiva University, New York, U.S.) and Olav Sorenson (University of California, Los Angeles, U.S.). Empirical and theoretical submissions about talent and technology in creative industries are solicited for selection in the special issue.


Subject
We are calling for a special issue on the changing face and fate of talent in the shifting sands of new technologies in the creative industries. Recent technological developments – including generative AI and the rise of digital streaming, online platforms, and other tools for the production and consumption in arts and culture – can have important implications for the role of talent in creative industries. This special issues collects new economic research that explores the interplay between technological developments and the creative talent in a variety of settings relevant to cultural economics.


Topics (include, but are not limited to):

  • Technological change in the entertainment and media industries
  • The effect of AI on the entertainment and creative industries
  • The changing role of talent in filmed entertainment and creative industries
  • The future of visual arts in the age of AI
  • Performing Arts in the age of AI
  • Automation of gaming
  • Bias in the new media industries


Submission procedure
Please submit your papers through the ordinary submission process of the Journal of Cultural Economics (this opens in a new tab) selecting as article type S.I.: Talent and Technology in Creative Industries. The deadline for submission is June 15th, 2024. Earlier submissions will immediately follow an accelerated review process by the guest editors. The refereeing process will try to desk reject papers that do not fit this rather broad agenda or are not at the quality level expected for the issue. Some papers that are not a good fit for the issue may, subject to authors' permission, be referred to the Journal as regular submissions.
