Sustainable Energy Challenges

Climate change and sustainability are challenging energy systems to new levels of innovation, in terms of technology, regulation, and social values. It is relevant to develop research, through an interdisciplinary context to present, share and discuss the most recent experiences, research results, innovations, and ideas around the multiple themes on Sustainable Energy Challenges. Access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy is an increasingly present concern and an increasingly essential one on the path to prosperity and global economic growth. Many important and challenging research areas in Energy Economics have the potential to significantly affect our future energy needs.

Many articles are recently being published in Energy Economics due to the energy transition debates that arose and the interest in sustainability issues that are emerging surrounding these challenges. Although it is not a new topic and there is a lot of research on the various subtopics that make up the theme of sustainable energy challenges, there are recent concerns related to the technological evolution of new sustainable energy sources, the evolution of markets, policies, and the behavior of consumers. It is an ever-changing topic that requires constant updating.

This Special Issue intends to compile the latest research in Energy Economics that presents solutions and ways to solve the energy challenges of the coming decades. The scope cover topics of Energy Economics related to sustainable challenges, related to new primary sources, technologies, production, storage, consumption, markets, finance, education, and social aspects, in different levels and sectors, as in buildings, cities, industry, or mobility, based in innovative indicators, data and policy analysis, and recommendations.

From the articles presented at the 6th Annual Conference of the APEEN, to be held on the 3rd and 4th February 2022, only those considered suitable for the Special Issue would be accepted. Many recent innovations are emerging in the literature regarding Sustainable Energy Challenges (both in economic or environmental terms) and this is the main topic of the conference.  Moreover, by joining economists and engineerings' efforts to provide reasonable and novel solutions for the challenges that the current economies face and that are to come.

Contributions to this Special Issue may address any of the following topics:

  • Renewable energy sources and technologies
  • Energy storage
  • Energy security and sustainability
