Recent Advances of Intelligent Approaches in Circular Supply Chain Management: From Energy and Environmental Perspectives

Since the last decade, a rising research trend has been covering the evolution of environmental and energy awareness in light of the requirements imposed by the main climate change consensus. Accordingly, a variety of strict rules have been laid down on individual companies and supply chains operating in both the manufacturing and service sectors. Based on these requirements, supply systems have been affected by sustainability issues, the impact of environmental management strategies, and the new opportunities provided to sustainable supply systems in terms of energy and environmental aspects.

Circular Supply Chain Management (CSCM) is a new approach in the corporation of production and distribution companies dealing with sustainability issues as well as resource consumption efficiency. In this regard, energy consumption management is one of the most critical issues. Energy efficiency stands for a pivotal resource for economic and social development, yielding critical benefits to different stakeholders. In addition to cost-savings, multiple benefits can be obtained by providing a better balance between energy/environmental issues and strategic business priorities.

According to these points of view, new concepts began to spread in the body of literature, namely circular economy, sustainable development, green design, resiliency, and energy awareness. Recently, many researchers have worked on these concepts in different phases of supply chain management using operations research techniques.

The growth in this research direction has been exponential, and this trend is likely to be sustained for at least another decade or more. However, proving the best possible decision for circular supply chains is more complex than in the traditional supply chain management that requires novel intelligence methods. In this regard, there is still room for advancing and enhancing the intelligence approaches and designing new ones for promoting the circular supply chain.

The objective of this Special Issue is to specifically explore and advance the latest achievements of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science (DS) and Computational Optimization (CO) in circular supply chains. This Special Issue offers a scientific venue catered for researchers who wish to make a rapid exchange of their ideas and innovative research findings that leverage on AI, DS and CO-Analytics and other topics covered in the call. The reason for this attitude is that tangible results can save time and prevent future damage. Therefore, the proposed intelligent methods can significantly contribute to real-world projects. The results also provide a prospective prediction of the technical performance of the systems under study.

We invite researchers and experts worldwide to submit their high-quality innovative research papers and critical review articles on the possible topics below. Due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, priority will be given to manuscripts that contribute to the application of circular supply chain in addressing the current situation.

In general, manuscripts should be submitted in Word and not exceed 7000 words.
