Call for Papers: Special Issue on “High Throughput Sequencing for plant health certification and quarantine inspection”

The European Journal of Plant Pathology is seeking submissions for a Special Issue on High Throughput Sequencing for plant health certification and quarantine inspection” guest edited by Dr. Hano Maree (Stellenbosch University), Dr. Leonardo Velasco (Instituto Andaluz de Investigacion y Formacion Agraria, Pesquera, Alimentaria y de la Produccion Ecologica) and Dr. Stephan Winter (Leibniz Institute DSMZ).

Submission open: 1 November 2023
Submission close: 30 May 2024

Technological advances facilitate people's lives, economic development, and business competitiveness. HTS technologies have been with us for some time now and have enabled enormous progress in plant health, from the discovery of new pathogens, etiology, diagnosis, to the determination of multiple infections. Despite this, the official schemes currently accepted for plant sanitary certification still rely on biological indexing aided by diagnostic methods based on serology and PCR.

While HTS technologies have matured and consensus on the best for purpose sequencing platforms, and bioinformatic analyses almost reached, HTS is not yet widely applied for official plant “health” certification. There is a need to assess the potential of HTS in practice, for plant certification, breeders, nurseries and germplasm collections.

This special issue in EJPP welcomes submissions featuring practical approaches and use of HTS in pathogen diagnostics:

Application of state-of-the-art HTS technologies in plant pathogen diagnostics, from viruses, viroids to phytoplasma, bacteria and fungi

  • Methods to analyze and interpret high-throughput sequencing data
  • Regulatory aspects of the application of HTS technologies in plant pathogen / virus certification
  • Use of HTS technologies in quarantine of plant imports/export inspection
  • Implementation and validation of ISO protocols for HTS technologies in plant virus certification and quarantine control
  • Comparisons of classical, diagnosis by indexing and other conventional methods and HTS on material for certification
  • Discuss/ assess HTS data as a proxy to real pathogens and biology – from sequence to biology
