Aquatic Geochemistry - George Luther Award

Aquatic Geochemistry Editor, George Luther, is awarded the 2013 Geochemistry Division Medal

Dr. George W. Luther III, Editor-in-Chief for the journal Aquatic Geochemistry, has been awarded the prestigious 2013 ACS Geochemistry Division Medal at the ACS National Meeting in New Orleans (7-11 April 2013). He was awarded this medal for his significant contributions to aqueous geochemistry, which include contributing to the development of chemical sensors and the application of voltammetry to quantifying trace element speciation in natural waters; the application of physical inorganic chemistry to understanding electron transfer in natural waters; and elucidation of microbial and chemical processes in sulfur and metal cycling.

George W. Luther his B.A. in Chemistry at La Salle College in 1968 and his Ph.D. in Physical-Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1972. He joined the University of Delaware in 1986 and is a Maxwell P. and Mildred H. Harrington Professor of Marine Studies in the School of Marine Science and Policy there. He has joint appointments in the departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Plant and Soil Sciences.

He has served as Editor-in-chief of Aquatic Geochemistry (2002-present), Associate Editor of Aquatic Geochemistry (1993-2001), Associate Editor for Marine Chemistry (1995-present), and Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiological Chemistry (2011 – present). He has also received several honorary awards, including University of Cardiff’s (Wales) highest honorary title of Distinguished Visiting Fellow, (1996-present); Geochemical Society’s Clair C. Patterson Award (2004); Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, 2011) and  Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU, 2012). Dr. Luther has an extensive publication history with over 220 scientific publications.
