Dear colleagues of the adsorption community,

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Prof Douglas (Doug) M. Ruthven passed away on September 23 at the age of 82 in Old Town, Maine (USA). Doug was one of the leading pioneers in adsorption science and engineering, his name being synonymous with adsorption theory and practice. He was internationally known for his research in chemical engineering covering all aspects of adsorption from fundamentals to processes. His book “Principles of Adsorption and Adsorption Processes” (Wiley, 1984) is still in print and remains one of the most cited  reference works in the field. He also was co-author of such seminal reference books as “Diffusion in Zeolites and other nanoporous materials” (Wiley, 1992), “Pressure Swing Adsorption” (Wiley, 1994), “Encyclopedia of Separation Technology (ed.)” (Wiley, 1997) and “Diffusion in Nanoporous Materials” (Wiley – VCH, 2012).

He was a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton (Canada) between 1966 to 1995, and at the University of Maine, Orono (USA) between 1995 to 2018. He published more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers, served as editor of the journal Chemical Engineering Science, and was a member of the editorial board of five other leading scientific journals. He taught several undergraduate and graduate courses, supervised 40 graduate theses and 17 postdoctoral fellows.

He was a past President of the International Adsorption Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. For his outstanding research, Doug received some of the most prestigious honors available: the Max Planck Research Award, an award from the German Humboldt Foundation and Max-Planck Society, the Century of Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering, and an ScD from the University of Cambridge. Doug´s legacy will inspire future generations of adsorption scientists in the world for years to come. He was not only an exceptional scholar but also an energetic and generous human being who is sorely missed by all who knew him and his work. The extended obituary can be found at:
