Press Release

Prof. Dr Katharina Pahnke, University of Oldenburg, Germany is the recipient of the German Society for Marine Researchs Georg Wüst Prize 2023

Vienna, April 26th 2023. The Georg Wüst prize has been awarded to Prof. Dr. Katharina Pahnke, Professor for Marine Isotope Geochemistry from the University of Oldenburg, Germany, for her excellence as a mid-career scientist by the German Society for Marine Research at the General Assembly 2023 of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) (this opens in a new tab) held at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV) (this opens in a new tab) in Vienna, Austria.

This prize is to show our support to the outstanding scientific contributions within modern ocean research. With this prize, we honor excellent, high-profile, mid-career scientists, filling the gap between numerous awards for early career scientists and lifetime achievements.

The prize was first inaugurated in 2005 in Vienna at the EGU general assembly where Arnold Gordon and Jörg Wolff presented the award to Stephen Rintoul. In the following years, an illustrious group of high- profile marine researchers was awarded: Eberhard Fahrbach (2007), Karen Heywood (2009), Andreas Oschlies (2011), Gregory Johnson (2013), Carsten Eden (2015), Ilker Fer (2017), Hans Burchard (2019), and Erik von Sebille (2021). It is the ninth time that this biannual award, kindly supported by the publisher Springer and the Journal Ocean Dynamics, is presented by the German Society for Marine Research (DGM, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Meeresforschung).

The German Society for Marine Research has about 300 members, aiming at supporting communication and networking between scientists in ocean research and is involved in strengthening the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021- 2030 with a spectacular permanent exhibition in Hamburg. This year, we celebrate the 13th edition of the successful YOUMARES (YOUng MArine RESearchers) conference series for young marine researchers at the national Museum of Natural Science in Berlin.
