About this book

This book presents the principles, methods and techniques to characterize materials and technical systems. The book is organized with concise text-graphics compilations in three parts:

The first part describes the fundamentals of measurement, testing and sensor technology, including a survey of sensor types for dimensional metrology, kinematics, dynamics, and temperature. It describes also microsensors and embedded sensors.

The second part gives an overview of materials and explains the application of measurement, testing and sensor technology to characterize composition, microstructure, properties and performance of materials as well as deterioration mechanisms and reliability.

The third part introduces the general systems theory for the characterization of technical systems, exemplified by mechatronic and tribological systems. It describes technical diagnostics for structural health monitoring and performance control.

About the author

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Horst Czichos is a former President of BAM, the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (1992-2002) and of EUROLAB, the European Federation of National Associations of Measurement, Testing and Analytical Laboratories (1999-2003). He holds degrees in precision engineering, physics and materials science from the Free University and the Technical University of Berlin, and obtained a Dr. h.c. from KU Leuven University for his research work in tribology. He is currently Professor of Mechatronics at the University of Applied Sciences, BHT Berlin, and received 2007 the Beuth Award for achievement in engineering education. He is also an invited Professor at the German University of Cairo. Professor Czichos is one of the Editors of the Springer Handbook of Metrology and Testing (2011) and editor of the Handbook of Technical Diagnostics (Springer, 2013).

Shaza Sameh graduated in Mechatronics with a B.Eng. from the German University in Cairo (GUC). Currently, she performs a study on micro mechano-opto-electronic sensor technology for bio-medical applications.
