About this book

This textbook provides an up-to-date overview of the most important parasites in humans and their potential vectors. For each parasite, the book offers a concise summary including its distribution, epidemiology, life cycle, morphology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, prophylaxis and therapeutic measures. Numerous tables, diagrams and over 200 colorful illustrations highlight the main aspects of parasitic infestations and present suitable control measures. 60 questions help to test readers’ theoretical knowledge of the field. In short, the book is highly recommended for anyone looking to delve into the field of human parasitology. It is intended for students of biology and human medicine, medical doctors, pharmacists and laboratory staff alike. Furthermore, persons who plan to visit or live longer in endemic regions will find essential information on necessary preventive and control measurements.

Reviews

“The author has very concisely covered parasitology in a handy-sized book … . Its sections are clearly laid out with each parasite being broken down into smaller parts, making it easier for the reader to refer to. I particularly enjoyed the option of being able to find studies from recent papers in the further reading section after each parasite. … I enjoyed the layout of the book and shall use it to refer back to when I need to.” (Rashmita Bodhani, Microbiology Today, August, 2017)

About the author

Prof. Dr. Heinz Mehlhorn (Düsseldorf, Germany) has investigated parasites, their transmission pathways and significant control measures for over 40 years. He has published more than 20 books and 250 original publications and received 25 patents on antiparasitic drugs, some of which he uses at his university spin-off company Alpha-Biocare (founded in 2000). As a university instructor he had the pleasure to introduce many students to the topics in parasitology. Many of them are now professors or in leading industrial positions. In television and radio broadcasts he regularly informs the public about relevant parasitological problems.
