© SpringerGeography is global. It is the study of place and space, the relationships and interaction between people and the environment. Geography is also interdisciplinary, and many of the key global challenges today are solved through geographic thought. In 2017 the Springer Geography team disseminated research from some of the world’s key geographic thinkers. Their research covered highly topical issues including Land Cover Changes in Nepal, Landscapes and Landforms of the Lesser Antilles, Ethnic Landscapes of America, Urban Transformations in Rio de Janeiro and Himalayan Quality of Life, to name but a few.

One notable trend in Geography during 2017 was the prevalence of high impact research relating to ...

... Geographic Information, Innovation and Technology, including E-Democracy for Smart Cities, Societal Geo-innovation, The Rise of Big Spatial Data, Seeing Cities Through Big Data, Digital Urban Acupuncture (exploring the possibility to observe the lives of cities through ubiquitous information obtained through social networks and sensors).

The Springer Geography team has been proud to be engaged with ground-breaking research in world regional, economic, urban, physical, human, cultural, historical, and medical geography in 2017. In particular, the urban geography program has produced outstanding titles on Urban Development in Asia and Africa, Greening Cities, and Urban Morphology and Housing Market. Indeed, the economic geography program has grown with important titles such as The Geography of Tourism of Central and Eastern European Countries, Geographical Dynamics and Firm Spatial Strategy in China, and the popular title Car Tourism.

2017 was a strong year for physical geography and world regional geography, especially the internationally renowned World Geomorphological Landscapes book series, which celebrates the geomorphology of each country in a highly illustrated and informative way. The Springer Geography team organized a meeting with many of the book series authors and editors in New Delhi, India, in November 2017, during the 9th International Conference on Geomorphology to celebrate recently published volumes and plan the way for the future national contributions. Other important Geography series to watch in 2018 include the World Regional Geography Book Series which will publish a much anticipated treatise on The Netherlands, and The Latin American Studies Book Series, which will publish Geoethics in Latin America.

Looking to the future, many of the contemporary geography sub-disciplines will be discussed in the new book series Key Challenges in Geography which connects the physical, human and technological sciences to enhance teaching, research, and decision-making. It is proudly published in association with the European Association of Geographers (EUROGEO). In addition, I also recommend the broad interdisciplinary Springer Geography book series which is now accepting proposals for 2018. This series has many exciting titles on the way including Exploring Sustainable Land Use in Monsoon Asia, Basic Principles of Topography, and Megacities 2050: Environmental Consequences of Urbanization. We have just launched the new Urban Studies web site, detailing the progress from the Urban Geography team. The future is bright, the future’s Geography!
