Senior Editor, Dr. Annett Büttner on 2017

In 2017, the world faced serious challenges. Earthquakes, hurricanes, heat waves as well as big fires have affected the planet and its inhabitants. We at Springer play an important role in distributing the latest scientific findings, also in the field of geosciences to document these catastrophes, their origins and potential ways to minimize their effects on the population.

We are happy to announce the successful impact of our 2017 pilot initiative “Every Review Counts”. One of our leading journals, Environmental Earth Sciences, was chosen for this project. For every peer review completed in 2017, Springer Nature made a donation to a charity project ...

... that was chosen by the Editors-in-Chief. In honor of these reviewers, Springer Nature, in coordination with the nonprofit humanitarian organization ‘Filter of Hope’, provided household water filters that remove microorganisms, protozoa, bacteria and cysts from contaminated water to households in third-world countries. We will continue and expand this initiative in 2018!

The Earth Sciences group at Springer has expanded its portfolio of journals and books, a portfolio focused on all areas of Geosciences to provide platforms for researchers and practitioners to connect across the wide variety of this field. This will also be the focus for 2018, since the demand for publications in the Geosciences and their applications is growing.

I wish all of us a prosperous New Year and a lot of new and interesting publications!

Annett Büttner, Senior Editor, Earth Sciences
