Tell us about your background: 

I am a professor at College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, Shanghai. I finished my Bachelor and Master studies in Tongji University and received a PhD in Urban Planning and Policy in the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. My research interests include theories and practices of urban planning, built environment and public health, and healthy city studies. I take the lead in conducting research and practice on healthy city planning in China. I've identified elements of healthy urban planning and the mechanism for the prevention and intervention of chronic non-communicable diseases from the perspective of urban planning; I have revealed the mechanism of urban planning elements on public health and also has established health impact assessment (HIA) models for planning proposals and mega projects.

I serve as an expert on healthy planning guidelines launched by the World Health Organization and UN-Habitat; I initiated and led the first editorial board for the criteria system for healthy urban districts; I have been the chairman of sub-sessions and roundtables of several international conferences, and have been invited by the World Bank as a speaker on webinars tackling the COVID-19 crisis; I am the deputy editor-in-chief of China's first health impact assessment manual; I have established the first Healthy City Committee in China, the Healthy City Wlan Lab, and the International Network for Healthy Cities Studies. In 2019, I was awarded by the Chinese Academy of Engineering as an ‘Outstanding Young Scholar at the Frontier of Chinese Engineering’.

Why did you become a professor in Engineering? 

I set my career goal as a professor during my PhD studies. Conducting research on topics that I am curious about and unveiling the mysteries by modeling and data analysis have been my upmost enthusiasm since I was a doctorate student. I also believe that educating students to better understand the world and to be innovative is meaningful. I chose urban planning as my research field because it is a comprehensive discipline that has the potential to both integrate many other disciplines and benefit our life and human well-being.

What advice would you give to young women interested in science and engineering?

Break away from clichés on the role of women in families and society. Never constrain yourself from discovering your real self. If you enjoy yourself doing research, just go for it.
