Polar studies is an interdisciplinary field which continues to grow in importance.  The UN has recognised the sensitivity of the Polar regions not only to climate change but also acknowledged that some of the greatest current concerns are the effects from potential oil and chemical spills into the seas and oceans, which would be catastrophic for the delicate balance of these pristine environments.  The transport of pollution/contaminants by sea and air transport also gives cause for concern.  The IPCC Special Report on Climate Change IPCC Global Warming Report  indicates that global warming will continue well into the future.  Marine ice sheet instability in Antarctica and loss of the Greenland ice sheet will contribute to sea level rise for many years to come.

The development of the Springer Polar Sciences programme is closely connected with the emergent interest in Arctic and Antarctic research.

In 2018 there has been a significant growth in the Polar Sciences programme at Springer with many new book titles and journal articles, including a special Issue on, The Ecology of Tundra Arthropods, which appeared in the August 2018 issue of Polar Biology.

The Springer Polar Science Series published its 11th title: Arctic Triumph.  More titles are planned to appear in the book series in 2019.  The eagerly anticipated book,  The Ecosystem of Kongsfjorden, Svalbard will be published in the series, Advances in Polar Ecology early in 2019.

Springer is also proud to announce the launch of a new Springer journal, Safety in Extreme Environments, an international peer-reviewed journal which will provide an interdisciplinary platform for safety related aspects of human activity in extreme environments.  The Editorial Manager online submission portal is now active and accepting papers.

The wealth of peer-reviewed innovative information in Polar Sciences is available on SpringerLink.
