About this book

By C. Sainte-Rose As we stand at the dawn of the 21st century, one may ponder the rationale of writing a book on spina bifida. Once commonplace in European countries prior to the era of ultrasonography, this disease became increasingly rare in developed countries as a - sult of improvements in antenatal diagnosis, to the point that we believed it to be d- appearing. Knowledge of spina bifida and of its treatment, once so richly diffused - ly 30 years ago, began to fade. Young neurosurgeons who had never seen such a m- formation at its initial presentation were hesitant, and did not understand the protean clinical signs of these patients presenting to the emergency department or outpatient clinics. This situation, however, did not last for long. As a consequence of the poli- cal and economic events of the final years of the 20th century, the advent of globa- sation, and the significant desire for immigration, we realised that spina bifida had not disappeared at all in the rest of the world. Migration was, and is, bringing it back - to our doorstep, to our everyday clinical and surgical practice. It is important the- fore, not to lose the knowledge gained by our masters, to try and assemble it in one place in order to understand the disease from its inception in utero through until adu- hood and the reproductive age.

Reviews

From the reviews:

"This is a comprehensive book from specialists in several surgical fields who share a particular interest in and ability to care for children afflicted with spina bifida. … The work is highly technical and, although it will be valuable only to pediatric neurosurgeons, it is a valuable reference for anyone interested in this narrow subject or attempting to provide optimal care to these children. … All Chapters are well illustrated and nicely referenced."(Robert M Arensman, Doody’s Review Service, November, 2008)

"Spina Bifida: Management and Outcome is a valuable addition to the library of any health care professional involved in the management of spina bifida. It includes a wide spectrum of topics, and the presentation of well-established as well as new information makes the book a useful read. In particular, the extensive collection of images and photographs is a unique and valuable resource. The extensive and up-to-date bibliography provides the reader with ample opportunity for further exploration of the topic." (Sasha Burn and James Drake, Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 301 (4), 2009)

"This recently published book on Spina Bifida represents a due update on a disease that has been erroneously considered of relatively low scientific significance in the western world during last decade. … the book which is supported by the all over high-quality reproduction of images represents a standard of care collection which every involved physician should have the will to consult in the management of this kind of disease." (Gianpiero Tamburrini, Child’s Nervous System, Vol. 25, 2009)

"This book … represents a multidisciplinary approach to spina bifida. For those radiologists dealing with significant imaging volumes of pediatric spinal cases, the information contained in this 534-page text will be of great interest. The book is well designed and features a great deal of imaging in many chapters …. There are excellent histopathologic and gross anatomic specimens … . For those wanting a well-rounded … understanding of spina bifida, this book deserves consideration, either for one’s personal library or for a departmental library." (American Journal of Neuroradiology, Vol. 30, March, 2009)
