Das Buch „Die neue Kunst der Gesellschaft“ entwirft eine neue kultursoziologische Beschreibung der Gegenwartskunst. Anders als in den Standardwerken von Pierre Bourdieu und Niklas Luhmann soll die Kunstszene nicht als Feld oder System, sondern als Formation aus Praktiken  verstanden werden. Die Analyse stützt sich auf Denkformen der Praxissoziologie. Sie nimmt auf diese Weise erstmals in adäquater Weise die Expansion der Kunstwelt in den Blick. Beispiele liefern unter anderem die Documenta und die Skulptur Projekte Münster.
