- About this book
-
The emergence of intelligent technologies, sophisticated natural language processing methodologies and huge textual repositories, invites a new approach for the challenge of automatically identifying personality dimensions through the analysis of textual data. This short book aims to (1) introduce the challenge of computational personality analysis, (2) present a unique approach to personality analysis and (3) illustrate this approach through case studies and worked-out examples.
This book is of special relevance to psychologists, especially those interested in the new insights offered by new computational and data-intensive tools, and to computational social scientists interested in human personality and language processing.

Yair Neuman (b. 1968) is Full Professor at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Brain Sciences Foundation, a co-director of the Behavioral Insights Research Lab at U. Toronto and affiliated with many other organizations.
He received his BA in Psychology (Major) and Philosophy (Minor) and his PhD in Cognition (Hebrew Univ. 1999) and his expertise is in interdisciplinary research where he draws on diverse disciplines to address problems from an unique perspective.
He was the chief algorithm developer of the IARPA metaphor project (ADAMA group).Prof. Neuman has published extensively in leading journals and in various disciplines such as Natural Language Processing, Semiotics, Psychology and Mathematical Modeling. In a previous book of his, he proposed a new approach to cultural psychology. Computational Personality Analysis is the fifth book of Professor Neuman's.

“This is a unique book connecting simple pragmatic, commonsense ideas with complex theories. It considers various models of personality with their strengths and weaknesses, describes novel computational approaches to personality analysis and interestingly applies it to various cases from the identification of terrorists to the analysis of political leaders.” (Prof. Leonid Perlovsky, Editor, Physics of Life Reviews, Author of "Neural Networks and Intellect: using model-based concepts" (Oxford UP))
“This is truly a seminal volume in machine learning approaches to computational personality analytics. A most comprehensive and innovative description is provided of supervised analytics of personality, with many contemporary applications.” (Prof. Fionn Murtagh, Editor, The Computer Journal, C, Author of "Multivariate Data Analysis" (Springer))
“Professor’s Neuman book about computational personality analysis introduces the reader to a leading-edge field with many practical applications and opens new perspectives in psychology in the age of algorithms and big data. The author explains in plain and simple language the state of the art in personality theory, text analysis and machine learning. Beyond its pedagogical value, the text presents also original concepts and methodologies emerging from both encyclopedic knowledge and hands-on experience. Combining scientific and mathematical rigor with a deep humanistic understanding of the complexity of the human soul, Prof. Neuman does not avoid the profound epistemological and ethical problems facing the new discipline.” (Prof. Pierre Lévy, Author of "Collective Intelligence" (Harper Collins) Canada Research Chair in Collective Intelligence Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada)
