About this book

This book presents the principal structure, networks and applications of the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) for enhanced airborne Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS). It shows how their implementation works to ensure better security in flight and on the airports surface; improved aircraft tracking and determination in real space and time; and enhanced distress alerting, safety; and Search and Rescue (SAR) system for missing, hijacked and landed aircraft at sea or on the ground. Main topics of this book are as follows: an overview of radio and satellite systems with retrospective to aeronautical safety; security and distress systems; space segment with all aspects regarding satellite orbits and infrastructures; transmission segment of radio and satellite systems; ground segment of radio and earth ground stations; airborne radio and satellite antenna systems and propagation; aeronautical VHF and HF Radio CNS systems and networks; Inmarsat, Iridium and Cospas-Sasrast aeronautical satellite CNS systems and networks; Aeronautical Global Satellite Augmentation System (GSAS) and networks; Digital Video Broadcasting - Return Channel via Satellite (DVB-RCS) standards and Aeronautical Stratospheric Platform Systems (SPS) and networks.

About the author

Stojče Dimov Ilčev (Prof. Dr.) is leading Research and Postgraduate Studies in Space Science and Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) Systems at Space Science Centre (SSC) of Durban University of Technology (DUT), Durban, South Africa. He studies both maritime radio engineering and nautical science at Montenegro University in Kotor, maritime electronics and communications at Rijeka University in Croatia, postgraduate studies in satellite engineering at Skopie University in Macedonia and Belgrade University in Serbia. Ilčev holds Bachelor (BSc), Master in Electrical Engineering  (MSc) and Doctor of Science (PhD) degrees. He also holds the certificates for Radio operator 1st class (Morse), for GMDSS 1st class Radio Electronic Operator and Maintainer and for Master Mariner without limitations. Since 1969, Ilčev worked onboard merchant ships, in Satellite Earth Station, at Coast Radio Station, shipping company, Nautical School and at Maritime Faculty. In the same time he worked in company IS Marine Radio providing new CNS solutions, so in early 1999 Prof. Ilčev invented Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) and other related projects. Since 2000, he worked at CNS Systems Company on research and projects in modern CNS systems for all mobile applications. He has published five books on space CNS engineering and systems for maritime, land and aeronautical applications, two books in satellite meteorological observation, about 150 papers and he has many projects and inventions in CNS fields including DVB-RCS and Stratospheric Platforms.
