© SpringerThe international peer-reviewed journal Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (MME) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) will be published by Springer Nature starting in January 2019 with volume 36. This broad-based forum for the exchange of real-world findings and theoretical research will be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in academia, industry and government institutions who are working in mining, minerals and natural resources. The journal was previously published by SME under the title Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Its scope has now been broadened to represent the full spectrum of interests of the society.

In six issues per year, this subscription journal with open access options will publish original research, in-depth reviews, short communications, and reviews of new technologies and industrial methodologies. Mary Poulton, co-director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at the University of Arizona, heads MME as its executive editor. She is supported by three section editors-in-chief responsible for the fields of mining, minerals and exploration, respectively: Jurgen Brune at the Colorado School of Mines, Ronel Kappes at Newmont USA, and Virginia McLemore at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources. In addition, MME has an international editorial board of more than 20 experts from academia, industry and government.

“The mining industry is extremely broad and complex, so we tend to put different specialties in silos. MME, with its integration of topics, allows us to  break down those silos and share the latest advances across the breadth and depth of all the associated disciplines, from fundamental geology of mineral deposits to advanced separation technology to robotics in extraction to synthetic biology to aid revegetation,” explained Poulton.

Barbara Arnold, President of SME, said: “Our new journal will become a significant member benefit, and I’m looking forward to the breadth and depth of articles that we'll publish. MME will support our vision of being the premier resource for the mining and mineral community we serve.”

David Kanagy, Executive Director of SME, added: “This will enhance the value of SME for all members and advance the technical dissemination of information.”

Charles Glaser, Editorial Director of Applied Sciences at Springer Nature, said: “We are very pleased to enter into this new collaboration with the SME. MME is a high-value addition to our portfolio in materials science, and we look forward to growing the journal, while serving the needs of its authors and readers.”
