About this book

This book offers a collection of specimen multiple choice questions (MCQs) for the first FRCR examination in clinical radiology that is for the physics module. It includes questions arranged in nine sets of 40 MCQs following the examination format. Additionally, chapters cover explanation to some of the answers for better understanding of the topics. The book covers updated syllabus of Royal College of Radiology (RCR), UK on scientific basis of medical imaging, including topics in molecular imaging.

Each chapter with a practice set comprises of questions arranged in the order of the syllabus of the examination, starting from the basis of medical imaging and radiation physics to the principles of specific modalities and safety issues.

This book offers assistance to candidates preparing for the first FRCR examination, clinical radiology trainees, and radiology and nuclear medicine postgraduate students.

About the authors

Professor Ibrahim Lutfi Shuaib (FRCR) graduated from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is a professor of radiology and senior consultant radiologist at Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Malaysia. He has many peer-reviewed international publications and delivered numerous oral and poster presentations in national and international meetings. He is involved in post-graduate radiology teaching and has been an examiner in local master of radiology program. He has been actively involved in formulating the curriculum of the program and organising yearly the mock anatomy and physics FRCR examination in Malaysia. Professor Ibrahim is the chairman of the committee for post-graduate teachings of College of Radiology, Malaysia.


Dr Hafiz M Zin obtained his PhD from the joint physics department, Institute of Cancer Research, London and Royal Marsden NHS, UK. He is a senior lecturer in medical physics at Advanced Medical and DentalInstitute at Universiti Sains Malaysia (University of Science, Malaysia). He is involved in teaching physics module for the master of medicine program, FRCR short courses and mock exams at the institute. His research interest is to improve targeted radiotherapy treatment of cancer using optimized image guidance modalities. He has presented his research in several international conferences and has published papers in international journals. He is the vice president of Malaysian Association of Medical Physics and a member of Institute of Physics, UK and the Malaysian Institute of Physics.


Dr Rafidah Zainonis is a medical physics lecturer in Advanced Medical and Dental Institute at Universiti Sains Malaysia (University of Science, Malaysia). Dr. Zainonis obtained her bachelor and master degree in medical physics from Universiti Sains Malaysia. She graduated from University of Canterbury, New Zealand with a Ph.D in medical physics. She is actively involved in teaching, undergraduate and postgraduate students’ supervision and research activities. Her research interests are in image processing, radiation dosimetry, medical imaging, nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. 


Dr. Noor Diyana Osman is a senior lecturer and medical physicist at Advanced Medical and Dental Institute at Universiti Sains Malaysia (University of Science, Malaysia). She completed BSc. in medical radiation, MSc. in medical physics from Universiti Sains Malaysia and PhD in medical radiation physics at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. She is actively involved in teaching, students’ supervision and research work. Her research interests are medical image processing and radiation dosimetry that primarily focus on diagnostic imaging study. She has published several journal articles and conference papers.


Dr Mohd Zahri Abdul Aziz is a senior lecturer at oncological and radiological sciences cluster, andclinical physicist in brachytherapy treatment in oncology unit at Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia (University of Science, Malaysia). He has also gained experience on interstitial brachytherapy at Chulalongkorn University and National Cancer Institute, Thailand and has also served as a lecturer and tutor at Ministry of Health and MAHSA College, Malaysia. Dr. Aziz completed BSc. in medical radiation, MSc. in medical physics and PhD in medical radiation physics. He is an active researcher in the field of medical physics, has published articles and received awards.
