About this book

This open access book explores the synergies and tensions between safety and security management from a variety of perspectives and by combining input from numerous disciplines. It defines the concepts of safety and security, and discusses the methodological, organizational and institutional implications that accompany approaching them as separate entities and combining them, respectively.

The book explores the coupling of safety and security from different perspectives, especially: the concepts and methods of risk, safety and security; the managerial aspects; user experiences in connection with safety and security.

Given its scope, the book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of safety and security, and to anyone working at a business or in an industry concerned with how safety and security should be managed.

About the authors

Corinne Bieder is the Head of the Safety – Security management research program at ENAC (the French Civil Aviation University). She has worked and conducted research in safety management in a variety of high-risk industries for many years. She has published a number of papers and books on safety management, and is a member of the international NeTWork think tank addressing safety from a multidisciplinary perspective, as well as the strategic analysis group FonCSI (Foundation for an Industrial Safety Culture).

Kenneth Pettersen Gould is an associate professor in risk management and societal safety at the University of Stavanger. His research concerns how risk, reliability, safety and security is analysed and managed in organizational contexts, and how regulatory and management strategies in these areas can be further developed. A particular area of interest is the management of safety and security in technological systems, with critical infrastructures, transportation systems and civil aviation as focus areas.
