Authorship Guidelines

Authorship credit should be based on:
1) substantial contributions to conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data;
2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content;
3) final approval of the version to be submitted for publication.
All of these conditions should be met by all authors.
Acquisition of funding, collection of data, or general supervision of the research group alone does not constitute authorship.
All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in an acknowledgments section.
General submission notes:
When submitting, authors should list their names in ‘first name family name’ order.
All authors must agree on the sequence of authors listed before submitting the article.
All authors must agree to designate one author as the corresponding author for the submission. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to dialogue with the co-authors during the peer-reviewing and proofing stages and to also act on their behalf.
If the article is accepted for publication, after acceptance, no changes in authorship, the order of authors, or designation of the corresponding author will be permitted.

Statement of Editorial and Publication Policies

Peer Review Guidelines for Authors

Double-blind reviewing procedure
The journal follows a double-blind reviewing procedure. Authors are therefore requested to place their names and affiliations on a separate page and authors should avoid language that could identify themselves as the authors.
Authors should properly cite and reference their own work, but should not use phrases such as “In our previous work (Smith, 2011), we presented…” which identifies the author. Such work should be referred to in the third person, e.g., “Previously Smith (Smith, 2011) presented…”.
Manuscripts will be sent to at least two reviewers. Reviewers are requested to treat the manuscript confidentially.
The Editors-in-Chief’s judgment is final with regard to suitability for publication.

Guidelines for Authors and Reviewers

Preliminary selection
The Editors will evaluate the research articles before sending them for in-depth review. Manuscripts will be rejected without review:
1) that are not written in standard, grammatically correct English or do not have good figure quality
2) that do not fall within the Aims and Scope of the journal
3) that have not followed the Author Instructions regarding manuscript submission, format and style
4) that have been submitted elsewhere
5) that have been published elsewhere
6) that are translations of non-English published work [see Translations in Statement of Editorial and Publication Policies for more detail].
General recommendations for authors and reviewers
As well as the points listed above, the following are guidelines that the authors should consider as they prepare their manuscripts for submission. Reviewers should keep these points in mind when reviewing. Chances of rejection of the manuscript are significantly increased if the manuscript:
1) lacks structure or logical flow (e.g., introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion, etc.)
2) lacks focus on the interface of environment, development and sustainability
3) consists essentially of repetition of already published data/papers, with no new insights
4) lacks analytical quality control
5) contains no new science
6) reports on local or regional issues, but does not explain the wider international relevance/application
7) does not highlight and explain clearly the new science/insights versus current knowledge
8) lacks complete and up-to-date references
9) contains theories, concepts, conclusions, etc. that are insufficiently supported by the supplied data, arguments and information
10) does not provide enough information to permit repetition of the experimental work
11) contains data coming from an incorrectly designed experiment or statistical analysis that is faulty or insufficient

English Language Editing

For editors and reviewers to accurately assess the work presented in your manuscript you need to ensure the English language is of sufficient quality to be understood. If you need help with writing in English you should consider:
  • Asking a colleague who is a native English speaker to review your manuscript for clarity.
  • Visiting the English language tutorial which covers the common mistakes when writing in English.
  • Using a professional language editing service where editors will improve the English to ensure that your meaning is clear and identify problems that require your review. Two such services are provided by our affiliates Nature Research Editing Service and American Journal Experts. Springer authors are entitled to a 10% discount on their first submission to either of these services, simply follow the links below.
Please note that the use of a language editing service is not a requirement for publication in this journal and does not imply or guarantee that the article will be selected for peer review or accepted.
If your manuscript is accepted it will be checked by our copyeditors for spelling and formal style before publication.

In general, manuscripts should not exceed 7000 words.

Types of papers

The Journal publishes original papers, review articles, case studies and book reviews. For book reviews, please contact the Book Review Editor of the Journal. The Journal will consider the publication of a very limited number of special issues.
Special Issues/Sections
A very limited number of special issues will be considered for publication. A special issue is devoted to a single, well defined topic, and should contain approximately 150 typeset pages (approximately 9 papers). The title of the topic, as well as the guest editors’ names, will appear in the issue.
A proposal for a special issue should be sent to the Editors-in-Chief or the Publisher. In order to consider the proposal, it should include the following:
• guest editors’ names and affiliations
• tentative title
• an outline summarizing the objectives of the special issue and indicating how it relates to the aims and scope of Environment, Development and Sustainability.
• tentative time schedule for delivery
• list of tentative contributions, including article titles and authors.
A special issue proposal must be approved by both the Editors-in-Chief and the Publisher. If approved, an agreement will be drawn up between the guest editors and the Publisher, outlining the procedure and deliverables.
All papers must undergo a double-blind peer-review process, which includes the possibility of rejection. This process will be handled by the guest editors outside of the online reviewing system. Final acceptance of the Work, upon delivery to the Publisher, is subject to the approval by the Editors-in-Chief of the journal.
