Bacterial community compositions in sediment polluted by perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) using Illumina high-throughput sequencing

High-level PFOA lead to an increase in relative abundance of Proteobacteria, ε-Proteobacteria, Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas. Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas are positively correlated with the concentration of PFOA, suggesting that both genera were resistant to PFOA contamination.
Operator decision support system for integrated wastewater management including wastewater treatment plants and receiving water bodies

Macroinvertebrate assemblages in agricultural, mining, and urban tropical streams: implications for conservation and management

Variations in macroinvertebrate communities among various land-use settings are attributed to land-use-induced changes in water quality. It emphasizes the importance of forested watersheds together with good farm management practices in mitigating the impacts of agriculture, fostering macroinvertebrate conservation and ecosystem integrity.

Antibiotic concentration and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in two shallow urban lakes after stormwater event

Based on the 16S rRNA genes of 50 randomly selected isolates from each water sample of two lakes, Aeromonas and Bacillus were dominant genera. Presences of nine antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the 100 solates were detected and most of these isolates harbored at least two ARGs with different functions. This study indicates that strong storm events potentially contribute to the transfer of ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria from land-sewer system to the urban Lakes.
Effects of calcium supplementation on growth and biochemistry in two passerine species breeding in a Ca-poor and metal-polluted area

A Ca-supplementation experiment on free-living passerines, was carried out in a Ca-poor area associated with metal pollution. Parents are capable of finding sufficient Ca-rich foods to allow nestlings to grow properly. Snail shells were an abundant Ca source in the moderately polluted zone for pied flycatcher, and great tits likely combines the intake of snail shells and other anthropogenic Ca-rich items. Great tits and pied flycatchers may employ different strategies in response to low Ca availability.
Biomarkers of oxidative stress and metal accumulation in marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus)

Different environmental profiles at three investigated sites exert different responses in antioxidant protection and regulation of metal and cellular homeostasis in frogs. Heavy metals that accumulate in tissues promote a variety of physiological disorders. This study showed that P. ridibundus accumulated heavy metals in tissues that impinged on their oxidative status. The positive and negative correlations determined between certain oxidative stress biomarkers and concentrations of metals demonstrated that the antioxidant defense functions were integrated in a balanced and coordinated system. Frogs are reliable bioindicators of heavy metal pollution.

Effects of engineered application of Eichhornia crassipes on the benthic macroinvertebrate diversity in Lake Dianchi, an ultra-eutrophic lake in China

Benthic macroinvertebrate responses were assessed to engineering on a large-scale using of E. crassipes for pollutant removal in an ultra-eutrophic via a one-year investigation. Confined growth of E. crassipes did not destroy the community of benthic macroinvertebrate. In contrast, they could enhance the benthic macroinvertebrate species and biodiversity indexes beneath E. crassipes mats. E. crassipes could be used as a pioneer species in ultra-eutrophic lake pollutant removal if harvesting schedule is well managed.
Modulation of 17β-estradiol induced estrogenic responses in male goldfish (Carassius auratus) by benzo[a]pyrene and ketoconazole

Interactive effects of chemicals, including benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and ketoconazole (KCZ), on 17α-estradiol (E2) induced estrogenic responses in male goldfish (Carassius auratus) is investigated on the expression of cytochromeP4501A (and on EROD activity, as well as on the expression of CYP19 (steroidogenic enzyme) and E2 bioaccumulation in liver. The results suggest that the modulation of E2 induced estrogenic responses by BaP and KCZ were correlated to the alterations of E2 bioaccumulation in goldfish, leading to a combination of changes in the capacity of biotransformation and steroidogenesis.
Reconstruction of historical lead contamination and sources in Lake Hailing, Eastern China: a Pb isotope study

Lead and its stable isotopic ratios were determined in a lake sediment core to receive anthropogenic impacts. Based on mixing end member model of Pb isotope ratios, coal combustion emission dominated anthropogenic Pb sources in half century contributing from 13% to 43% of total Pb in sediment. Contributions of chemical and organic fertilizer were 1-13% and 5-14%, respectively. In contrast, the contribution of leaded gasoline was low than 8%. The results indicated that historical records of Pb contamination predominantly sourced from coal combustion, chemical and organic fertilizer in the catchment.

Elimination of radiocontrast agent diatrizoic acid by photo-Fenton process and enhanced treatment by coupling with electro-Fenton process

The removal of radiocontrast agent ditrizoic acid from water was performed using Photo-fenton (PF) and photo-electro-fenton (PEF) processes providing respectively in a couple of hours up to 80% TOC removal efficiency for PF and a total minéralisation for PEF.
Screening beneficial rhizobacteria from Spartina maritima for phytoremediation of metal polluted salt marshes: Comparison of gram positive and gram negative strains

25 bacterial strains have been identified from rhizosphere of Spartina maritima in a metal contaminated estuary. Gram-negative isoates displayed higher tolerance towards metals and a greater metal biosorption, being so far appropriate for phytoremediation purposes.
Probabilistic integrated risk assessment of human exposure risk to environmental bisphenol A pollution sources

5 human health concerns ( ) were addressed for establishing an association with bisphenol A (BPA) . BPA exposure were less likely to pose significant risks for infant ( 0-1 year) and adults ( male and female over 20 years) with 10-6 increase in uterus weight and immune response outcomes.

Biota monitoring and the Water Framework Directive - can normalization overcome shortcomings in sampling strategies?
The study presents an overview of the existing fish monitoring data for HCB, Hg and 32 PFOS in German freshwaters. It is concluded that a commitment to a harmonized sampling strategy is inevitable to ensure that compliance monitoring results in a comparable assessment at different sites.
Trace element contamination differentiates the natural population of Scots pine: evidence from DNA microsatellites and needle morphology.
These studies show one of the aspects of the correlations between high trace metals contamination and the genetic differentiation of Scots pine populations growing in polluted environment. Incorporating measurements of genetic diversity for diagnosing the state of environmental pollution may influence the obervations of interdependencies.
Export Product Diversification and the Environmental Kuznets Curve: Evidence from Turkey.
The environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis is valid in Turkey in both the short run and the long run over the period under concern. In the long run, a positive effect on energy consumption on CO2 emissions is obtained. A greater product diversification of exports yields higher CO2 emissions in the long run.

From wetland to farm and back again: phosphorus dynamics of a proposed restoration project

Phosphorus dynamics is studied in a former wetland, which had been converted to a farm, and now consists of two shallow, flooded ponds that are being proposed for aquatic habitat restoration. These works provide a framework for decision to balance the competing demands of habitat restoration vs. water quality.
Natural plant colonization improves the physical condition of bauxite residue over time

Natural processes of regeneration, stabilization and attenuation have improved the hostile physical environment of bauxite residue, allowing structural stability of the site and plant colonization.
The impact of military activities on the concentration of mercury in soils of military training grounds and marine sediments

High concentration of Hg in soil samples was observed in some sites dedicated to military activities and ammunition dumpsites. The significant higher concentration of mercury was detected in sites where chemical warfare agents were found.

Future of lignite resources: a life cycle analysis

Lignite is a low-quality energy source which accounts for 13% of China's coal reserves. Results showed that lignite mining, direct air emissions and electricity consumption have most significant impacts on the environment. These findings provide useful inputs for both industrial practice and policy making for exploitation, processing and utilization of lignite resources.
Occurrence, fate, and risk assessment of selected endocrine disrupting chemicals in wastewater treatment plants and receiving river of Shanghai, China

The occurrence and fate of five endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) was investigated in four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and receiving river of Shanghai area. Biological treatment was the major removal stage of selected EDCs in WWTPs. The risk quotient of nonylphenol (RQ>1) was higher than any other pollutants, indicating its relatively higher potential risk for the aquatic organism. These results will provide significant background data to future EDCs pollution control and management in Shanghai, China.

Ignored fungal community in activated sludge wastewater treatment plants diversity and altitudinal characteristics

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and 454 pyrosequencing were combined to investigate the abundance and diversity of the activated sludge fungal communities from 18 full-scale municipal WWTPs in China. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most abundant phyla, dominated by Pluteus.
Atmospheric deposition of PBDEs and DPs in Dongjiang River Basin, South China

The atmospheric deposition fluxes of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and dechlorane plus (DPs) in Dongjiang River Basin of the Pearl River Delta in South China were investigated. The deposition fluxes in summer were generally higher than those in winter.High deposition fluxes of PBDEs and DPs in urban areas and significant urban/rural gradient implied that local industrial activities in the urban areas were primary sources.
Differential response of coral communities to Caulerpa spp. bloom in the reefs of Indian Ocean

Continuous monitoring of the coral communities an unprecedented growth of macroalgae as a bloom at Gulf of Mannar (GoM) and Palk Bay (PB) reefs which are protected and unprotected respectively. Live coral cover was lost at an annual rate of 4% in PB due to the Caulerpa racemosa blooms. The recovery of a coral reef after a macroalgal bloom largely depends on coral species composition and the frequency of stress events.
