Coal is one of the world’s most important fossil fuels, and it is vital to investigate its utilization in order to improve efficiency and to reduce the emission of some contaminants, which is a gloabl issue.
The International Conference on Coal Science and Technology (ICCS & T) aims to promote international communication and cooperation in the context of coal science, technology innovation and industrial development, thus advancing the world’s coal science and technology. The 2017 ICCS & T conference attracted a diverse international audience and focused on various aspects of energy science and engineering, particularly coal science and technology, bioenergy and biofuels, fuel cells, energy storage materials and related areas of interest.

Special Issue on Efficient Conversion of Middle- and Low-rank Coals and their Derivatives 

Guest editors - Professor Xianyong Wei and Professor Jingpei Cao, China University of Mining & Technology, China

Middle- and low-rank coals, including subbituminous coals and lignites, account for larger amount of coal resources over the world. Their efficient conversion is greatly important not only for reducing pollutions caused by conventional coal conversion technologies, but also for increasing more valuable products and thereby improving economic benefits from the coal conversion.
This special issue reviews recent advances in basic research and technological development on efficient conversion of middle- and low-rank coals and their derivatives.

Special issue on Theory and Practice of Water-preserved Mining 

Guest editor - Professor Limin Fan, Shaanxi Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring, Key Laboratory of Mine Geological Hazard Mechanism and Control, Ministry of Land and Resources, China

Exploration and mining operations can pose a threat to the local environment, such as a decrease of regionally available water resources and deterioration of the ecology and the environment. There have been increasingly emphases on sustainable developments in mining to minimize these mining-induced environmental effects.
The aim of this special issue is to improve the global understanding of a sustainable mining development, especially for water resource protection.

    Aims and Scope


    The International Journal of Coal Science & Technology is a peer-reviewed Open Access journal focusing on key topics of coal scientific research and mining development. It will serve as an international forum for scientists to present their research findings, and to discuss new developments and challenging issues in the field.


    The scope of coverage is broad, extending to such topics as:

      Coal geology, geochemistry, geophysics, mineralogy and petrology – coal basin and coal seam formation and evolution; petrology of coal; organic matter-rich shales, including mineralogy, geochemistry, formation, transport and storage of gases in coal and shales; unconventional energy systems (e.g. oil shales, shale gas, and other carbon-based fuels); ore deposits of materials and rare metals in coal and coal-bearing strata; and groundwater management


      Coal mining theory, technology and engineering – coal-measure rocks/ground behavior; mine construction; drift excavation; grouting; support technology; tunnels; mining disaster prevention; green mining; top coal caving; systematic mining technology for super-thick or thin seams; CBM exploration and management


      Coal processing, utilization and conversion – coal chemistry; beneficiation; liquefaction; gasification; coal water slurry; coal power plant; combustion; coking; by and end products of coal utilization; clean coal technology; low carbon technology; CC(U)S; and IGCC


      Coal mining environment and reclamation – Waste management and waste minimization practices; coal mine site closure, decommissioning and reclamation; adverse effects of toxic elements during coal utilization and mining; post-combustion pollution control; waste disposal; and mine water drainage


      Other key topics relating to coal science and technology – mine survey; mine health and safety; CO2 mineralization and utilization etc.
