About this book

This book highlights time reversal acoustics, techniques based on the symmetry properties of acoustic fields. It has the unique feature that the first eleven chapters of the book are on the indepth studies of the theories of time reversal acoustics. The remaining chapters are on the four  major applications of time reversal acoustics, together with their experimental setups and case studies: underwater communication, seismic exploration, nondestructive evaluation, and medical ultrasound  imaging.. The gauge invariance approach to acoustic fields, proposed by the author in 2007, is confirmed by the successful fabrication of acoustical metamaterials and the applications of time reversal acoustics to superresolution. The book also presents groundbreaking applications of time reversal acoustics to underwater communication technology and the application of metamaterials to time reversal acoustics.

About the author

Dr. Woon Siong Gan completed his B.Sc. in physics in 1965, his DIC in acoustics and vibration science in May 1967, and his Ph.D. in acoustics in February 1969, all from the Physics Department of the Imperial College London. He obtained his PhD at the age of 24.He served as an associate professor in the Physics Department of Nanyang University, Singapore, from 1970 to 1979. From 1979 to 1989, he was a practicing acoustical consultant. In 1989, he founded Acoustical Technologies Singapore Pte Ltd, a research and technologies company focusing on ultrasound technologies, especially acoustical imaging. The company has since developed and patented the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM) and the surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. He is also the author of these  books: Acoustical Imaging: Techniques and Applications for Engineers, published by John Wiley & Sons in June 2012., New Acoustics, based on Metamaterials published by Springer in 2018, Gauge Invariance Approach published by Springer in 2019, Signal Processing and Image Processing for Acoustical Imaging published by Springer in 2020.He is the first to introduce transport theory into condensed matter physics in 1966.  Transport theory is today the foundation of theoretical design of materials.  He is the first to introduce  gauge theory  into acoustics  in 2007.
