Overview
- Provides an overview of potential transformation processes of metals build-up on roads and related stormwater quality impacts
- Enables informed decision-making for stormwater pollution mitigation
- Discusses how dry weather periods influence metal transformation
- Describes the persistence, mobility, toxicity, and bioavailability of metals and their impact on stormwater quality
- Presents a novel approach to quantify risk associated with the metal content of road dust, based on their bioavailability characteristics

About the authors
Ayomi Jayarathne is a Research Assistant at the Queensland University of Technology. She received her Ph.D. in Water and Environmental Engineering from the same university in 2018. Her research interests include investigation of environmental contaminants, urban pollutant processes, pollution mitigation and assessment of ecological and human health risks of contaminants. She has published her findings in several high impact factor peer-reviewed journals.
Buddhi Wijesiri is a Research Associate at the Queensland University of Technology. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Water and Environmental Engineering from the same university in 2016. His research expertise includes statistical modeling of environmental systems and uncertainty assessment, and assessment of risks to human and ecosystem health due to water pollution. Dr Wijesiri is an Adjunct Professor at Shenzhen University, China, and an Adjunct Research Fellow at Beijing Normal University, China. He has published one book and over 25 research papers primarily focusing on urban stormwater quality.
Prasanna Egodawatta is a Senior Lecturer in Water/Environmental Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology. He received a Ph.D. from the Queensland University of Technology in 2007. He has over a decade of experience in both, industry and academia in water and environmental engineering fields. The main focuses of his research are urban hydrology, stormwater quality and water and environmental systems modeling. Dr Egodawatta has published extensively in environmental science and environmental engineering fields with a key focus on stormwater quantity and quality modeling. He has also undertaken a number of research and consultancy projects establishing links between the research domain and industry practice.
Godwin A. Ayoko is a Professor of Chemistry at the Queensland University of Technology. The main focuses of his research are development and application of modern analytical procedures for characterizing and monitoring pollutants in the environment. He also has interests in synthesis, characterization and application of inorganic materials and transdisciplinary research using multivariate data analysis techniques in fields such as stormwater and river water pollution. He has co-authored over 250 scholarly publications.
Ashantha Goonetilleke is a Professor of Water/Environmental Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He focuses on producing research outcomes of relevance to industry and the community and the translation of these outcomes to practical applications. His areas of expertise include stormwater pollution and mitigation, water-sensitive urban design (WSUD), climate change adaptation, integrated water resources management (IWRM) and stormwater and wastewater recycling and reuse, and water conservation. He has co-authored over 250 scholarly publications, including five books and over 150 journal papers.
