Springer Nature’s 2017 Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship Accepting Submissions

New York, 29 August 2017

The Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship for attendance to the Charleston Library Conference provides $1,500 to a librarian who has demonstrated an active interest in the profession, but has not had an opportunity to attend the annual gathering of librarians due to lack of institutional funding. The scholarship is to be applied to the costs of registration, travel, accommodations and meals.

Applicants will be required to detail a project or initiative developed at their library to help enhance diversity in the selection of resources or provide services to support the research and learning needs of all segments of the academic community. For more information about applying for this new scholarship, librarians should visit springernature.com/hurdmemorialscholarship.

The inaugural recipient of the Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship was Sabrina Dyck, a Faculty Librarian at Tallahassee Community College who serves as the Liaison to the Departments of History and Education.

“I was truly humbled and honored to be the first recipient of Springer Nature’s Cynthia Hurd Memorial Scholarship,” said Sabrina Dyck.  “As an early career librarian, I take an avid interest in learning as much as I can about the profession, the amazing work of colleagues, and networking with peers. This generous scholarship offered me the opportunity to attend the Charleston Conference where I was able to network with colleagues and to learn about the amazing projects and initiatives taking place in libraries across the globe. Much of what I learned at the conference I’ve been able to apply in my current work as a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Tallahassee Community College (TCC). I will forever be grateful for this extraordinary opportunity, and I shall always hold dear the memories I made in Charleston.”

“The Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship embodies the values of our diverse and inclusive sales organization,” said Springer Nature’s Maria Lopes, Vice President, Institutional Sales. “We are proud to honor Cynthia’s dedication to helping others by expanding learning opportunities for library professionals through this scholarship.”

Springer Nature launched the Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship in 2016 to honor the legacy of the librarian, Cynthia Graham Hurd, who was killed in 2015 at the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

The submission deadline for the Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship is Monday, October, 2, 2017. The scholarship winner will be notified by email by Monday, October, 9, 2017.
