About this book

This book includes several special features related to Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Assessment (LCA and TEA) to enhance clarity, understanding, and engagement. It incorporates numerous diagrams, flowcharts, and infographics to visualize complex concepts and methodologies for assessing life cycle energy, emissions, resource depletion, and the techno-economic impact on society. Key data, comparisons, and results are summarized in tables and matrices for easy reference.

Additionally, the book presents real-world LCA case studies and scenarios to illustrate practical applications and lessons learned. Interactive elements, such as thought-provoking questions, exercises, and discussion points, encourage active learning. A clear, step-by-step presentation of LCA and TEA methodologies is provided, followed by in-depth analyses and discussions. These features make the book an accessible, user-friendly, and engaging resource for readers from diverse backgrounds and expertise levels.

The primary benefit of this book is a comprehensive understanding of the environmental and economic implications of various technologies, processes, and products. Readers will gain in-depth knowledge of LCA and TEA methodologies and their applications, learning how to evaluate and compare the sustainability and feasibility of different options. They will also gain insights into potential environmental and economic impacts and receive guidance on integrating LCA and TEA into decision-making processes. With access to case studies and real-world examples illustrating best practices, this book equips readers to make informed decisions, develop more sustainable solutions, and contribute to an environmentally conscious and economically viable future.

Dr. Srijit Biswas is Senior Research Associate (SRA) under the Scientists’ Pool Scheme of CSIR at the Engine Research Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT Kanpur, India. He received his PhD degree from Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Agartala in 2022 and M-Tech degree in 2016 and B-Tech degree in 2014 from the same institution. After completion of his Ph.D. work, he joined as an Assistant Professor at the University Centre for Research and Development of Chandigarh University in 2022. He joined the Engine Research Laboratory of IIT Kanpur as a Project Scientist and joined the team the LCA team for the project entitled “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of HEV, BEV and ICEV in India” and completed that project in a record time. For three years, he was awarded the Senior Research Associateship under the Scientists’ Pool Scheme of CSIR, India, and joined the same Lab for further research. His areas of interest include two broader aspects: (a) Life Cycle Assessment and Techno-Economic Assessment of Transportation industries, including the Well-to-Pump (WTP) for the various fuels and also Cradle-to-Grave (CTG) for vehicles; (b) Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition Strategies with biofuels and Diesel/Biodiesel. He has published 17 high-impact factor journal papers, which have 223 citations. With an h-index of 10 and an i10-index of 10, his research underscores his significant and influential contributions to the field.
