About the authors

Dr. Nadia Adrus is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). She holds a Ph.D. degree in polymer from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. With a specialization in UV photopolymerization and functional hydrogels for diverse applications, she brings almost 20 years of experience in research and teaching to her field. Her role also includes bridging research from the lab to the industry. Since 2016, Dr. Nadia Adrus has closely engaged with Alcon Ciba Vision Johor, to understand their needs, integrating her expertise in developing innovative solutions. She serves in advisory and technical consultancy roles for the photopolymerization of hydrogels used in UV curing of contact lenses. This collaboration underscores her dedication to advancing materials and processes in contact lens technology, facilitating their adoption in real-world applications.

Aqil Farizal is Research Officer in UTM Technology and Innovation Management Sdn. Bhd., a company under Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He graduated from UTM with bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, and previously, he is experienced in conducting research on cellulose dissolution and hydrogel formation during his undergraduate studies. With the knowledge on the fundamentals of polymer, he is currently working on a research project of alternative photoinitiators in contact lens formulation for UV-LED curing system, collaborating with Alcon Ciba Vision in Tanjung Pelepas Port, Johor. During this project, he was involved in analyzing contact lens properties and operating the contact lens manufacturing processes in prototype scale.

Dr. Jamarosliza Jamaluddin, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Chemical & Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, is a Research Associate with the UTM Biopolymer Research Group. Her work focuses on natural fibers, natural rubber, coatings and adhesives, hydrogels, and nanocellulose. She holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical-Polymer Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, an M.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and completed her doctoral studies at Dongguk University, South Korea. Her research expertise includes polymer adhesives and coatings, UV LED technology and photopolymerization, bioplastics, and natural fiber modification. She has also provided consultation for Alcon to improve the curing process of contact lenses, demonstrating her commitment to not only advancing research but also addressing real-world challenges through practical applications.

Fatria Syaimima Bin Syaiful Azim is Green Enthusiast with more than two years of experience in research and development which focuses on the use of eco-friendly alternatives and technologies in various applications, including contact lens, hydrogel, coating, natural fibre, electronic packaging, and bioplastic.  Currently, he continues to become Green Devotee as he works as Operation Engineer in the oil re-refining company that contributes solutions for a greener environment.

Farahin M Mizi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 2018. Following her interest, she has been working in the areas of polymer, hydrogel as well as in coating and encapsulation. Farahin is highly skilled in formulation development, process optimization, and material characterization. She has a demonstrated history of working in consultation with one of Malaysia’s contact lens manufacturers, mainly for formulation and process technology development.  Presently, she is focusing on the research and development on controlled release technology for environmental applications, specializing in agriculture and public health.
