This book reviews the background and evolving features of Sino-African relations, exploring various stages over the past 50 years. Pursuing an objective and forward-looking approach, it analyzes the development, current issues and future direction of Sino-African relations, as well as their global impact. Despite ideological and policy differences, it also outlines potential avenues of cooperation between China and western countries in promoting development in Africa. About the authors

Liu Hongwu is a Changjiang Scholar of Africa Studies appointed by the Ministry of Education of China,Qianjiang Scholar of the Zhejiang provincial government, Director of the Institute of African Studies, doctoral supervisor, and deputy head of the academic committee at Zhejiang Normal University. Liu is Vice President of the Chinese African Studies Association, deputy chairman of the Chinese Society of African Historical Studies, Vice-President of the Chinese Society for African History and council member of the Chinese-African People's Friendship Association. Liu, who studied in Nigeria and Tanzania in his youth, has visited over 30 countries in Africa. He has been Chief Expert on major projects supported by the National Social Science Fund and on Ministry of Education Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Research Projects. He is the author of more than ten monographs, and Editor-in-Chief of the Series of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University, the Annual Report on the Development of Africa, and African Studies, etc. He has won many national awards for his achievements in research and teaching. In 2009, Liu was one of the winners of “China-Africa Friendship Awards--The Ten Chinese who Moved African People” granted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Chinese-African People's Friendship Association.

Luo Jianbois Professor and department director at the Institute for International Strategic Studies of the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China. Luo has visited Africa, the United States, India, and ROK on academic exchanges and study trips. He was head of the National Social Science Fund project titled "Issues of Development with the African Union and African countries" (since completed). He is the author of African Integration and Sino-African Relations, The African Union and African Integration, and dozens of papers.
