We invite submissions for a topical issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics (PAGEOPH), entitled “Best Practices in Physics-based Fault Rupture Models for Seismic Hazard Assessment of Nuclear Installations: Issues and Challenges Towards Full Seismic Risk Analysis”. We aim to gather works from seismologists and earthquake engineers, from practitioners to earthquake scientists, on aspects related to ground motion models for seismic hazard assessment (SHA) and the engineering applications of simulated-based ground motion inputs, covering three main topics: 1) Current practice on the use of empirical ground motion prediction models for SHA in nuclear installations; 2) Physics-based rupture models: the role of stochastic, kinematic and dynamic rupture modes in SHA; 3) Engineering issues that rely on ground motion estimates for soil structure interaction, structural response and fragility curve analysis for quantification of seismic vulnerability of structures.
While this topical issue will mainly include works presented in the BestPSHANI 2018 Workshop (http://www.institut-seism.fr/en/2nd-workshop-best-psha-ni-may-2018-cadarache-chateau-france/), held in Cadarache-Château, France, 14-16 May 2018, we also encourage other submissions that are relevant to the topics defined above, with strong emphasis placed on practical applications and tailored to seismic hazard and risk assessments of nuclear installations.

In 2017, we marked 25 years since the destructive 1992 tsunamis in Nicaragua and Flores Island. These events resulted in several leaps forward in tsunami studies: on the theoretical and computational side, the Nicaraguan earthquake motivated the recognition of the W phase and the systematic identification of source slowness through Energy-to-Moment ratios. The Nicaraguan tsunami also saw the first systematic post-tsunami survey by an International team, which led to the development of computational techniques allowing the pursuit of simulations onto initially dry land. As for the Flores event, it provided the first evidence, at Bali Island, for the effect of diffraction on inundation in the near field. The identification of an underwater landslide as the source of the exceptional run-up amplitudes at Riangkroko heralded their recognition as critical tsunami sources. Progress in those fields was further achieved following subsequent events of seismic, landslide, volcanic or meteorological origin. At about the same time, the Tsunami Bulletin Board was developed to connect the entire tsunami community on the internet. In this context, this special issue is devoted to recent developments in tsunami science, in the past 25 years. We invite the papers on various subjects, including Tsunami warning and mitigation, Tsunami field survey, Coastal and open-ocean tsunami measurements, Real-time numerical modelling, Paleotsunami studies and historical events, Landslide-generated tsunamis and their modelling, Meteorological tsunamis, Tsunami communications/TBB, Tsunami cataloguing, etc. Overview papers demonstrating 25-year progress in these topics are very welcome.

Forensic Meteorology: Observations and models

Forensic science comprises many disciplines. It is itself the application of scientific methods, rather than a discrete subject, to the field of law. Popular specializations include molecular biology, toxicology, entomology, anthropology, physics, meteorology, and engineering. Many of these disciplines rely, in part, on climate and weather. Weather assists in the interpretation of causes, which may have led to an event, such as a motor vehicle collision, DNA degradation, and the condition of decomposing remains. The field of forensic entomology, for example, relies heavily on meteorological conditions in order to interpret microclimates and to ultimately calculate the post-mortem interval, or time since death. Meteorology is playing an ever increasing role as a source of critical knowledge that drives many interrelated physical and biological processes, ultimately increasing the fidelity of forensic data and advancing the field as a whole.
In particular, the interface between disciplines where expertise overlaps is typically where innovations applicable to forensic science are born. The pairing of forensics with modelling allows one to leverage meteorological data results in techniques that are tuned to the dominant environmental parameters driving a given system. For example, although the local variations of temperature may seem chaotic, the coupling of the temperature to a biological sample may change on a much slower timescale. The development of models that are both faithful to the nonlinearities of the underlying physical processes, while having reasonable physical assumptions is a key towards significant advancements at these subjects imposed interfacial boundaries.
To our knowledge, there is no journal that highlights the vital role that meteorology plays in forensic science. We, therefore, propose a Special Issue to feature this multidisciplinary approach, open the door to new avenues of research, and increase accuracy in the court of law.

We aim to gather works of experts in seismology, geodesy, and geodynamics, as well as data science on all aspects related to continental earthquakes, from the physics of earthquake preparation and occurrence to the simulation and data science related to the assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard.
While the issue will mainly include the works presented in the International Conference for the Decade Memory of the Wenchuan Earthquake with the 4th International Conference on Continental Earthquakes (The 4th ICCE) and the 12th General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission (ASC) held in Chengdu, China during May 12~14, 2018 (http://www.4thICCE.com/), we also encourage other submissions that are relevant to the study of continental earthquakes, including physics of earthquakes and faulting, predictive modeling of earthquake cycle, and comparative studies of inter-plate and intra-plate earthquakes. In particular we encourage works that make use of the state-of-the-art science and technology, especially data science and information technology, in the study of the predictability of major to great continental earthquakes.

Physics of Megathrust Earthquakes 

Megathrusts at subduction zones or continental collisions produce some of the largest earthquakes, often with global repercussions. Many aspects of the physics and geometry of these plate boundaries remain unknown, making quantitative predictions of seismic hazards difficult. In this issue, we welcome contributions that advance our understanding of the physics of megathrusts and their tectonic context. Of particular interest are contributions that discuss the coupling between short-term and long-term tectonics, the role of geometry and rheology of the plate interface and the bulk rocks. We welcome discussions about the interactions between slow and fast ruptures, or even a wider spectrum of mechanical instabilities, and their implications for seismic and tsunami hazards. Considering the tectonic setting as a system, we encourage discussions about the thermo-mechanical coupling within the lithosphere-asthenosphere system, including distributed deformation of the bulk rocks in the mantle wedge or in serpentinized regions. We encourage submissions from seismology, geodesy, geology, and modeling with equal enthusiasm.
Topical issues at PAGEOPH are peer-reviewed (with the possibility of rejection) and have an impact factor of 1.81. The publication is free of charge, except for open access, which is available for USD 3,000.

Open Call on Sea level variations: From minutes to centuries 

Klauss Wyrtki called sea level variations “the breath of the ocean”, emphasizing the key role such variations play in our understanding of the inner workings of the ocean. Accurate sea level information has become crucial for geoid determination and examination of vertical tectonic movements; sea level is a reliable indicator of global and mesoscale oceanic processes, including short-term climatic fluctuations, such as El Niño, open-ocean eddies, and oceanic circulation.
The longest sea level record, from Brest, France, began in 1806: scientists and other specialists working with various types of oceanographic data can only dream about time series of such length.
We invite you to submit overview and research papers on various aspects of sea level variations to the PAGEOPH Topical Collection "Sea level - 2017". Papers overviewing sea level variations in a particular geographical region or dealing with a specific problem (e.g. sea level and climate, estimation of extreme sea levels, satellite measurements of sea level, sea level and ice) are especially welcome.

Open Call on Mexico (Chiapas) Earthquake Mw 8.1 September 2017 

On 8 September 2017 at 04:49 UTC (23:49 local time of 7 September) a Mw 8.1 earthquake occurred off southern Mexico in 69 km depth approximately 90 km from Chiapas. The earthquake, which is among the three strongest in Mexico in 100 years, killed at least 90 people and affected more than 1.5 million. It was caused by the extremely fast subduction of the Cocos plate beneath Mexico, in a seismic gap of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. The earthquake generated widespread tsunami with maximum measured trough-to-crest wave height at Chiapas of >3.5 m and significant wave heights recorded along the West Coast and at many Pacific Islands.

Earthquakes and tsunamis in Iberia: 50th anniversary of the 1969 Saint Vincent earthquake (M=8.0) 

We invite submissions for a special topical issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics (PAGEOPH) entitle.

On 28 February 1969 a large earthquake, located at the zone where the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon shock occurred, stroke the Iberian Peninsula and northern Morocco with important damage and casualties. The shock, located at SW of Saint Vincent Cape, was followed by a tsunami that affected the SW of the Iberian Peninsula and Atlantic coast of Morocco. The goal of this Special Issue is to provide a highly visible means by which researchers from a wide variety of disciplines can readily present their works to all others who share a common interest in the earthquakes and tsunamis that occurred in the Ibero-Maghrebian region. We seek to assemble original research papers as well as comprehensive reviews dealing with characterizing this region. Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: crustal structure, seismic and geodetic networks, historical and instrumental seismicity, seismic sources, Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS), regional stresses and deformation, seismotectonics, seismic risk, tsunamis.
The submission deadline is May 15, 2019.

The Earth as a complex system, 2. Events and nuclear test sites, 3. Verification technologies and technique applications, 4. Performance optimization, 5. CTBT in a global context.
