About this book

This book gathers the proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Coal Combustion. The contributions reflect the latest research on coal quality and combustion, techniques for pulverized coal combustion and fluidized bed combustion, special issues regarding CO2 capture (CCS), industrial applications, etc. – aspects that are of great importance in promoting academic communications between related areas and the technical development of coal-related fields.

The International Symposium on Coal Combustion (ISCC), sponsored and organized by Tsinghua University since 1987, has established itself as an important platform allowing scientists and engineers to exchange information and ideas on the science and technology of coal combustion and related issues, and to forge new partnerships in the growing Chinese market. Researchers in the fields of clean coal combustion, carbon dioxide capture and storage, coal chemical engineering, energy engineering, etc. will greatly benefitfrom this book.

Guangxi Yue, professor of the Department of Thermal Engineering in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE). Shuiqing Li, professor of the Department of Thermal Engineering in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

About the editors

Chief Editor: Guangxi, Yue, professor in the Department of Thermal Engineering of Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Yue is a well-known researcher in areas of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler, coal combustion and pollution control and coal gasification. He has led many national key research projects in CFB for about 20 years in China, including the one regarding to the first 600MW supercritical CFB boiler, which was successfully put into operation in May 2013 and is still the largest CFB boiler in the world. The design theory of CFB boiler proposed by him has been adopted to most Chinese CFB boiler manufactures. In addition, Prof. Yue is also famous for his contribution in coal gasification research. He is the owner of technology of oxygen-staged entrained flow coal gasification. Prof. Yue published more than 400 papers and co-authored 6 books in the area of science and technology related to coal combustion andutilization.

Prof. Yue was honored with International Circulating Fluidized Bed Award of Achievement in 2011, First Class Prize of the Science and Technology Advancement Award of the Education Ministry of China in 2009, First Class Prize of the Science and Technology Advancement Award of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation in 2009, The 7th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award in 2008, Second Class Prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Award in 2006.

Chief Editor: Shuiqing, Li, professor in the Department of Thermal Engineering of Tsinghua University, China. Professor Li got Bachelor degree in 1993 and Doctor degree in 1997 in School of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, Zhejiang University. The overarching theme of Professor Li’s research is the physical understanding of particle media at various length scales, in combination with multi-field effects encompassing viscous flows, thermal boundary layers, electrostatics, laser optics, and chemically heterogeneous reactions. The total citation of his papers in these fields is above 200 times, with H-index as 8. He now holds 8 patents related the particle and combustion technology.

Professor Li is the member of Chinese NSF Review Panel of Engineering and Materials, and the 33 rd international symposium on combustion. Meanwhile, he organized the 1st, 2nd, 3rd UK-China Particle Technology Forum and was invited as the main speaker in many influential international seminars.

Due to his outstanding achievements, Professor Li was honored with National Award for New Century Talents in University and Best Presentation Award for Young Scholars of China Society of Particuology in 2009. He was also awarded the Best Paper Award of Chinese Combustion Institute in 2003 and 2008, as the 1st and 2nd author respectively.
