Dieses Buch vermittelt ein Profil der Disziplin Politikwissenschaft und skizziert einen Grundriß des Faches. Es macht das Wechselverhältnis zwischen Politik und (Politik-) Wissenschaft anschaulich, stellt Politikwissenschaft als eine Sozialwissenschaft in den engen Austausch mit Nachbarwissenschaften und arbeitet dabei das Spezifische der Politikwissenschaft heraus. Dargestellt wird die Entwicklung des Faches Politikwissenschaft in Deutschland mit dem Schwerpunkt Bundesrepublik, und es werden Wurzeln aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und davor gezeigt. Der systematische Überblick wird aufgelockert durch die Wiedergabe einer Diskussion zwischen vier Fachvertretern über Rolle und Auftrag der Politikwissenschaft sowie durch 20 kurze Porträts von profilierten Professoren der Politikwissenschaft.
