Diese Frage befeuert die soziologische Debatte um kulturelle Globalisierung, Kulturkreise und global mélange ebenso wie die politiktheoretische Universalismus-Relativismus-Kontroverse. Sophia Schubert etabliert zu deren konzeptuell präziser und systematischer empirischer Bearbeitung ein eigener Forschungsstrang im Paradigma der politischen Kultur : die ‚Diversitätsforschung’. Der zentrale Befund der Analysen lautet, dass derzeit keine der drei theoretischen Positionen (Einheit, Diversität, Hybridität) alleine zur Interpretation der globalen Konfiguration politischer Kulturen ausreicht. Sie sind komplementär. ​
