About this book

This invaluable resource discusses insights ranging from basic biological mechanisms of various types of stem cells through the potential applications in the treatment of human diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders. These discoveries are placed within the structural context of tissue and developmental biology in sections dealing with recent advances in understanding different types of stem cell biology and their potential applications in tissue repair and regeneration and in the treatment different types of human cancer and genetic diseases or disorders.

Stem Cells for Cancer and Genetic Disease Treatment and the other books in the Stem Cells in Clinical Applicationsseries will be invaluable to scientists, researchers, advanced students and clinicians working in stem cells, regenerative medicine or tissue engineering as well as cancer or genetics research.

About the editors

Dr. Phuc Van Pham received his Ph.D. in Human Physiology from Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He is currently a Professor of Biology at University of Science (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam); and Director of the Stem Cell Institute; Vice-Director, Key Laboratory of Cancer Research. He is a longstanding lecturer and translational scientist at the University, and is a member of several societies and journal editorial boards focused on stem cells. Dr. Pham and his colleagues have established one of the first multidisciplinary stem cell center in Vietnam, and he has successfully launched an array of technologies in stem cell isolations. His research interests include stem cell isolation, stem cell therapy, mesenchymal stem cells, cancer stem cells, immunotherapy and regenerative medicine and he has published extensively in these areas. After many years of experience as an embryologist, cell biologist, and molecular biologist, collaborating with leading researchers in Singapore, Japan, and the United States, Dr. Pham is a student again, keen to reach beyond the traditional boundaries of biology.

Professor Ahmed Hashash has completed his PhD from Manchester University, UK. He is a fellow of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and New York University Medical School (MSSM), USA. Prof. Ahmed Hashash worked as a senior biomedical research scientist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He was Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine at Keck School of Medicine and Ostrow School of Dentistry of The University of Southern California, USA. Prof. Hashash has joined The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Medical School-Zhejiang International Campus, (ZJU) as Tenure-Track Associate Professor and Senior Principal Investigator of Biomedicine, Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine. He is also adjunct Professor at the School of Basic Medical Science and School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. Prof. Hashash has several breakthrough discoveries in genes/enzymes that control stem cell behavior and regenerative medicine. He has published more than 34 papers in reputed international journals and serving as an editorial board member of repute. Prof. El-Hashash acts as a discussion leader at the prestigious Gordon Research Seminar/Conference in USA, and a Peer Reviewer/ International Extramural Review for The Medical Research Council (MRC) grant applications, London, UK. He is invited to speak at several international conferences in USA, Spain, Greece, Egypt and China. He is the editor or author of several books on stem cell and regenerative medicine.
