About this book

This two-volume book provides an important overview to EU economic and policy issues related to the development of the bioeconomy. What have been the recent trends and what are the implications for future economic development and policy making? Where does EU bioeconomy policy sit within an international context and what are the financial frameworks behind them?

Volume II explores the EU food sector, as well as food law and legislation, rural development in the EU, bio-based economy strategy, the circular economy and and bioenergy policies.

Reviews

“This publication is an outstanding resource for a growing sector of the economy- the bioeconomy. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the policies leading to the integration of the agriculture, food, rural, and medical sectors within a circular economy. It emphasizes the critical role of modern biology and appropriate policies in shaping the bioeconomy. Highly recommended for policymakers scholars and educated public with interest in the European Union and its future development.” (David Zilberman, Professor and Robinson Chair at the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department, University of California, Berkeley)

“Written by top scholars in the field, EU Bioeconomy Economics and Policies comprehensively treats both traditional topics of agricultural policy analysis as well as new policies focusing on biofuels, bioeconomy or circular economy. For students of economics, policy makers, general public or experts in the area, the book provides an excellent overview of EU policies that will determine the future development of European agricultural and food sectors and their effects on rural development, public health, environmental quality or climate change. A great book covering globally relevant issues.” (Jan Pokrivcak, Professor of Agricultural and International Economics, Slovak University of Agriculture)

“The book helps to build a comprehensive understanding of the economics of EU agriculture and related policies extending the boundaries of the assessment to the EU bioeconomy. This is important as the new uses of biomass are more and more interconnected to the traditional agricultural value chains. Looking at each of them in insolation would be obsolete. The bioeconomy perspective allows to grasp the most interesting dynamics of the future EU agricultural sector.” (Claudio Soregaroli, Associate Professor of Agricultural and Food Economics, Catholic University)
