About this book

The state of New Hampshire has played a pivotal role in Donald Trump's rise. This volume examines how the Granite State incubated Trump's political ambitions as early as the 1988 campaign cycle, how Trump's return to the state in 2014 presaged his 2016 candidacy, and how the state rescued his ambitions after his defeat in the Iowa caucuses. The book also examines how Trump lost the state to Hillary Clinton in the general election, and how the state has in many ways been a microcosm of national politics since Trump's election, as a Republican governor and legislature attempt to pursue their long-deferred agenda in the face of Democratic opposition and as Democrats racked up victories in special and off-year elections. Finally, this book examines what Trump's impact will be on the 2020 presidential primaries.

Reviews

“In 2016, Donald Trump and New Hampshire seemed like the Odd Couple of presidential politics. With numerous insights, Christopher Galdieri explains convincingly why the Granite State proved indispensable to Trump’s success. If you want a clear snapshot of the state of play in this key primary state, this is the place to go.” (Dante Scala, Professor, Political Science, University of New Hampshire, USA)

Donald Trump and New Hampshire Politics is a definitive discussion of the political success of Donald Trump in a uniquely important state. Galdieri provides a comprehensive treatment of everything that puts New Hampshire in a central place in American politics. In doing so, he helps us understand why Trump was successful and how he has changed American politics.” (David A.M. Peterson, Professor, Political Science, Iowa State University, USA)

“Chris Galdieri’s Donald Trump and New Hampshire Politics shows how important the Granite State was in the 2016election. This lively, well-written book raises provocative questions about how the American presidential primary system works and about how it has changed over the past few years. It is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand how Trump won and how Trump’s success will reshape presidential primary campaigns in both parties in 2020 and beyond.” (Robert G. Boatright, Professor, Political Science, Clark University, USA)
