About this book

Over the past two decades there has been a rapid transformation of masculinities in the West, largely facilitated by a decline in cultural homophobia. The significant changes in the expression of masculinity, particularly among younger generations of men, have been particularly evident in men’s team sports, which have become an increasingly diverse and inclusive culture. Drawing upon work from a wide range of established and emerging international scholars, this handbook provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary analysis of the contemporary relationship between masculinity and sport. It covers a range of areas including history, media, gender, sexuality, race, violence, and fandom, considering how they impact a range of different sports across the world. Students and scholars across many disciplines will find the unparalleled overview provided by these specially commissioned chapters an invaluable resource.

Reviews

“For anyone wishing to learn more about masculinity(ies) and sport The Palgrave Handbook of Masculinity and Sport has to be a ‘must read’. … the book is very successful at covering a huge range of issues and sports and doing so in a manner that engages the reader. As such, I thoroughly recommend it for anyone interested in masculinities in relation to sport.” (Neil Carr, Annals of Leisure Research, September 29, 2020)

“Sports have long been a primary site for expressions of masculinity. This well-edited collection indicates that these expressions have become increasingly diverse as hegemonic masculinity is challenged, contested, and rejected by athletes across teams, sports, and societies. These 30 articles capture these changes and provide examples of how a growing number of men in sports are pushing normative boundaries and giving each other more space to express who they are on and off the field. This seldom occurs without struggle and painful experiences, but this collection provides evidence to support optimism.” (Jay Coakley, University of Colorado, USA)

“This impressive Handbook brings together an international group of scholars to provide a go-to resource for understanding the intersection of masculinity and sport. Important topics are covered from violence and abuse to disability, embodiment and sexuality, with the sports discussed including Turkish oil wrestling, dancingon YouTube and roller derby.” (Mark McCormack, University of Roehampton)

The Palgrave Handbook of Masculinity and Sport offers a fantastic overview of contemporary research and theorizing at the intersection of two vitally important cultural phenomena. Its chapters cover men’s engagement in and relationship to an eclectic assortment of sports in a diverse set of contexts, examined from numerous methodological and conceptual viewpoints, making for an important addition to both masculinity studies and the sociology of sport. No doubt this text will quickly find its place in recommended reading lists across a wide range of university courses worldwide.” (Alex Channon, University of Brighton, UK)
