About this book

This book gathers selected papers presented at the 8th International Congress on Environmental Geotechnics (ICEG), held on October 28 - November 1, 2018 in Hangzhou, China. The theme of the congress is “Towards a Sustainable Geoenvironment”, which means meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Under this theme, the congress covers a broad range of topics and provides an excellent opportunity for academics, engineers, scientists, government officials, regulators, and planners to present, discuss and exchange notes on the latest advances and developments in the research and application of environmental geotechnics.

About the editors

Dr. Liangtong Zhan is a professor and deputy director of the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. He received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research focuses on waste mechanics, geoenvironmental engineering, unsaturated soil mechanics, and hazard mitigation. His recent research interests include the geotechnical properties of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge, landfill cover and barriers, remediation of contaminated soils, air and water flow, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled modeling, mitigation of natural hazards induced by extreme climate conditions etc. He has published more than 50 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, and serves as an editorial board member for the journal Geotextiles and Geomembranes and Canadian Geotechnical Journal. He also served as vice-chairman of the CTAG.

Dr. Yunmin Chen is a member of the Chinese Academyof Sciences (2015), and a professor at the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 1989. His research interests include soil dynamics, ground improvement and foundation engineering, and geoenvironmental engineering. He has been granted support for seven research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including one key project and one outstanding Young Scientist Award. He has finished several major consulting projects in China, including the construction of the first airport built on thick soft clay deposit in China, the evaluation of the dynamic stability of high-speed railway subgrade, controlling the settlement of highways on soft soil deposit using piled embankments, deep excavation of the Shanghai World Expo underground transformer substation, etc. Dr. Chen has published over 200 technical papers. He has received two national awards and an outstanding paper award from the ASCE, and serves as editor-in-chief of the journal Transportation Geotechnics, and as an editorial board member for three international journals.

Dr. Abdelmalek Bouazza received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, U.K. in 1990. His research interests include geosynthetics, landfills, heap leach/mining facilities and related barrier systems, geoenvironmental engineering, unsaturated geomaterials, and energy geotechnics (shallow geothermal). He has published over 100 journal papers and 5 books. He is very prominent in technical and professional society activities and serves on several international technical committees. Currently, he is the chair of the International Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee TC 215 on Environmental Geotechnics, secretary of ISSMGE TC308 on Energy Geotechnics, and a member of the Standard Australia Committee C20 on Geosynthetics. He serves on the editorial board of 10 international journals, and as an associate editor of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.
