About this book

Suitable for both individual and group learning, Engineering Acoustics focuses on basic concepts and methods to make our environments quieter, both in buildings and in the open air. The author’s tutorial style derives from the conviction that understanding is enhanced when the necessity behind the particular teaching approach is made clear. He also combines mathematical derivations and formulas with extensive explanations and examples to deepen comprehension. Fundamental chapters on the physics and perception of sound precede those on noise reduction (elastic isolation) methods. The last chapter deals with microphones and loudspeakers. Assuming basic mathematical skills including integral calculus, the book offers a short introduction on the use of complex amplitudes in acoustics. Moeser includes major discoveries by Lothar Cremer, including the optimum impedance for mufflers and the coincidence effect behind structural acoustic transmission.

"A readable and excellent text… unique in several ways… provides an excellent coverage of acoustic fundamentals… The book is excellent in dealing with noise control in interior spaces… excecllent book in the areas covered and it should be on the bookshelf of every noise control engineer.” J. Acoust. Soc. Am.

Reviews

From the reviews:

"Engineering Acoustics is a translation from German into ‘British’ English of Möser’s Technische Akustik. … The result is a very readable and an excellent text. … The book provides an excellent coverage of acoustic fundamentals. … many references are given that applied to the theory and for further study. … The book is excellent in dealing with noise control in interior spaces. … This is an excellent book in the areas covered and it should be on the bookshelf of every noise control engineer." (Elmer L. Hixson, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Vol. 116 (5), 2004)

"Michael Möser recently finished the 5th edition of ‘Technische Akustik’ … . He now presents the English translation: Engineering Acoustics. … it is a valuable source of information and reference for engineers and consultants working in noise and vibration control. … Reading this book is really fun, particularly if one not only wants to apply formulas, but to deeply understand the physical background of acoustic effects. … will surely become one of the standard textbooks in education and an important tool in professional noise control." (Michael Vorländer, Acta Acustica united with Acustica, Vol. 90 (4), 2004)

"This book is the English translation of the author’s German edition published in 2003 … . The book covers a wide range of topics with many clear and simple derivations of useful equations, a few exhaustive derivations, and many clear illustrations. … Engineering Acoustics is clearly written and … would assist the engineer outside the field of acoustics to get a quick understanding of the physical concepts involved and approaches to examining and solving certain classes of noise control problems in buildings." (Lewis S. Goodfriend, Noise Control Engineering Journal, Vol. 53 (6), 2005)
