About this book

Since the first edition of this book was published (Duvernoy 1988), considerable advances have been made. The new edition therefore includes current concepts about functions of the hippocampus and a study of its external and internal vas cularization. Head sections and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) views have also been added to the previous atlas of sections. The book is divided into four sections, preceded by an introduction (Chap. 1) and a short comment on the material and methods (Chap. 2). The first section ( Chap. 3) deals briefly with the structure, functions, and connections of the hip pocampus. This is followed in Chap. 4 by a description of the anatomy of the hippocampus and its relations with adjacent structures. The next section ( Chap. 5) is concerned with the vascularization of the hippocampus, and the final sec tion ( Chap. 6) is devoted to sectional anatomy and MRI. This work has benefitted from the invaluable help of many of my colleagues. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the late Professor Roger War wiek, who helped me clarify the difficult description of hippocampal anatomy. This book would not have been possible without the excellent illustrations by J.L. Vannson, the helpful advice given by Professor J. Guyot, Dr. P.Y. Risold, and Dr. F. Cattin, and the contribution made by Mr. A.E. Cabanis. I would also like to thank the members of the Department of Anatomy in Besans;on: Professor G.

Reviews

From the reviews of the third edition:

"This is a highly specialised tome whose state aim is to give a precise description of human hippocampus anatomy … . there are detailed photographs in black and white covering all aspects of hippocampal structure with detailed labelling and accompanying text. The text is readable and clearly written with extensive referencing. … This book is principally an anatomy book and as such would serve a broad spectrum of scientists … . a useful addition to the library of any specialist interested in the hippocampus." (Colin Watts, Acta Neurochirurgica, Vol. 147, 2005)

"The present third edition of ‘The Human Hippocampus’ provides a detailed description of the anatomy of the human hippocampal formation. … the book provides useful very information for the neurosurgeon who looks for gross anatomical details of the hippocampus and its adjacent structures. … it is a well-illustrated documentation of the gross anatomy of the human hippocampus useful for neurosurgeons and neurologists." (Michael Frotscher, Annals of Anatomy, Vol. 187, 2005)

"The Human Hippocampus is an excellent textbook indispensable to read for those who are interested in this structure. … The text is short, in perfect correlation with the figures. The quality of figures is excellent in each chapter permitting the reader to easily understand the constitution of this difficult topic. The quality of presentation and the indexation is very accessible with good readability. This book is an extremely valuable update for the anatomists, researchers and neurosurgeons … ." (F. Proust, Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, Vol. 27 (6), 2005)
