​Die ökonomische Gestaltung von Instandhaltungsmaßnahmen ist ein relevantes Thema in der Betriebswirtschaft: Durch eine Verbesserung des Anlagenzustands soll deren Leistungsfähigkeit erhöht werden. Der Fall externer Instandhaltungsdienstleister gewinnt in der Praxis immer mehr an Bedeutung. Hierbei ist eine dezentrale Koordination der Produktions- und Instandhaltungsprozesse notwendig, die der Autonomie von Produktion und Instandhaltung gerecht wird. Michael Kaluzny schlägt hierzu einen Ansatz auf der Grundlage einer Kanban-ähnlichen Steuerung vor, bei dem sowohl von der Produktion als auch von der Instandhaltung Einstellungen vorgenommen werden können. In diesem Kontext behandelt der Autor die zustandsorientierte Instandhaltung und die dynamische Reihenfolgeplanung von Instandhaltungsaufträgen.​
