About this book

This collective book aims to encourage and inspire actions directed towards raising public awareness of the importance of mathematical sciences for our contemporary society in a cultural and historical perspective. Mathematical societies, in Europe and around the world, can find ideas, blueprints and suggestions for activities – including concerted actions with other international organizations – directed towards raising public awareness of science, technology and other fields where mathematics plays a strong role. The material is divided into four parts:
• National experiences
• Exhibitions / mathematical museums
• Popularization activities
• Popularization: why and how?

Reviews

“It is intended to be a book with everyday illustrations of applications of mathematics intended to accompany introductory mathematics courses for a beginning university student. … The content invites to really work on the topics that were presented. So for students and their instructors, this gives a wealth of ideas for practical sessions that are intended to work with the theory from the mathematics courses in a practical environment.” (Adhemar Bultheel, European Mathematical Society, euro-math-soc.eu, March, 2016)

“This book contains the proceedings of an international conference held in Óbidos (PT) in 2010 … . you may learn many things from this book: a white paper for setting up an exhibition, topics and the material needed for organizing a workshop, links to interactive websites you want to add to your own creation, they are all there. Or maybe you are just generally interested and then there is much fun exposed left for you to grasp.” (A. Bultheel, The European Mathematical Society, August, 2012)
