About this book

This book discusses aspects of the theory and practice of qualitative research in the specific context of language and literacy education. It addresses epistemological perspectives, methodological problems, and practical considerations related to research involvements in areas of language education and literacy studies rather than generic issues of other fields of social sciences. The volume starts with Theoretical Considerations in the first part and raises some epistemological and theoretical concerns that are rarely debated in the specific context of research on language and literacy teaching. The second part, Methodological Approaches explores issues of the design and implementation of language and literacy education research within the framework of some of the major established qualitative research traditions. Finally, the part on Research in Action discusses practical aspects of a few actual instances of qualitative research on language and literacy education in different contexts.

Reviews

“This volume is one of the pioneering works in dealing with qualitative research within the realm of language and literacy studies. The editor has made a successful attempt to shed light on both theoretical and practical sides of qualitative inquiry. … this book has broken new grounds in qualitative research in language and literacy studies and is therefore a must-read for researcher in applied linguistics especially the ones with qualitative orientations.” (Mohsen Shirazizadeh, Applied Linguistics, Vol. 39 (05), October, 2018) “This excellent volume presents a range of perspectives on qualitative research that, together, highlight its theoretical and methodological usefulness to furthering understandings of language and literacy education.  A unique contribution is its integration of chapters on language education with those on literacy education, thereby emphasizing the common ground in qualitative inquiry of language in both spoken and written form. The volume can serve as a important resource for researchers and graduate students interested in advancing their understandings of the value of qualitative inquiry in exploring contexts of language teaching and learning.” ( Joan Kelly Hall, The Pennsylvania State University, USA)
