About this book

This Encyclopedia is designed to accumulate and systematize our knowledge about the unique natural water areas - the Laptev, East Siberian and Chukchi seas, their wealth, the events that took place on its waters and shores, and the remarkable people whose lives were and are closely intertwined with the seas. The Encyclopedia contains about 1,500 terms and concepts related to the seas in alphabetical order. It describes geographical features: rivers, lakes, straits, bays; provides information about towns, seaports, transport communications, basic aquatic biological species, nature reserves, national and international programs for the study of the sea, research institutes, historical monuments, activities of prominent explorers and travelers, researchers and scientists. The Encyclopedia also includes a chronology of major historical events connected with the Eastern Arctic seas for more than 400 years.

Reviews

“The Eastern Arctic Seas Encyclopedia is an alphabetically arranged, dictionary-style work covering the geographic area of the Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, and Chukchi Sea. … The strength of this book is its focus on Russian areas, people, and topics, and it would make an excellent addition to library collections focused on Russia or the East. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Undergraduates through professionals/practitioners; general readers.” (B. Galbraith, Choice, Vol. 54 (10), June, 2017)

“The coverage is generally very comprehensive. … The book is well designed and produced and is notable for a large number of illustrations, many in colour. … There is a very large amount of information in this remarkably compact book, much of which is on topics either new to many Western readers or otherwise not readily accessible. It is presented in an elegant single volume with useful and relevant illustrations.” (Stuart James, Area Studies, Vol. 31 (4), 2017)
