About this book
This thoroughly revised textbook provides a practically applicable guide to three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE). Background is provided on the evolution of the technology and physics that support the implementation of both transthoracic and transesophageal approaches to 3DE. The incremental value of 3DE to assess cardiac chambers is also described. Moreover, a range of cardiac valvular diseases including the mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valve have been portrayed and illustrated in depth. These include congenital abnormalities, regurgitation and stenosis. Emphasis is also placed on technical aspects of the technique and where it can provide added value, including post-surgery assessments and evaluation of cardiac masses.
Textbook of Three-Dimensional Echocardiography enables readers to develop a deep understanding of how to use this imaging modality. It provides a valuable resource for the echocardiography trainee looking to develop their knowledge and for the experienced practitioner seeking a comprehensive up-to-date reference.

About the editors
Prof Badano is member of the Italian Society of Cardiology, Italian Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound, European Society of Cardiology, European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), and serves as fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology. Prof Badano is a regular lecturer at ESC, ACC, ASE and EuroEcho scientific meetings. He has published more than 260 peer-reviewed full papers, authored 7 books about echocardiography and cardiovascular imaging. He is honorary member of the British Society of Echocardiography, Romanian, Hungarian and Korean societies of cardiology. From 2010 to 2012, he served as President of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging. In 2013, he was awarded with the silver medal of the European Society of Cardiology for his clinical and research activity and his services as President of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.
Roberto M. Lang is currently the Director of the Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging Laboratories at the University of Chicago and Associate Director of the Cardiology Fellowship training program. He is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He has published more than 570 manuscripts on cardiac imaging and physiology during his career as well as 10 books and 110 book chapters. Dr Lang has been a pioneer in the development of three dimensional transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, a non-invasive technique that is currently used world-wide to diagnose heart disease. He serves as a manuscript review consultant for most cardiology peer-reviewed journals and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Echocardiography, Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging and Journal of Echocardiography, the official journal of the Japanese Society of Echocardiography. Lang’s major research interests are the clinical utility of noninvasive techniques in assessing left ventricular contractile state/myocardial perfusion and Three-Dimensional echocardiography. He was the president of the American Society of Echocardiography and has recently given the Edler Lecture in the last Scientific Sessions of the American Society of Echocardiography and the Honorary Euro-Lecture of the European Society of Cardiovascular imaging.
Denisa Muraru is a cardiologist, currently working as a researcher at the University of Padua (Italy). She graduated from the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine in Bucharest (Romania). In 2011, she moved to the University of Padua in order to perform clinical research in the field of 3D echocardiography and received the PhD degree in 2013. She has a h-index of 23 (Scopus 2018). Her main research interests are: ventricular function and mechanics; valvular heart disease; clinical implementation of 3D echocardiography (software validation, reference values, outcome). She has been co-Director of several teaching courses and scientific meetings on 3D echocardiography organized by the University of Padua since 2012. She chaired the Education Committee of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) between 2016-2018.
