About this book

Pre-Hospital Anaesthesia is one of the most demanding interventions that can be made in the field. The exact incidence of failed intubation is difficult to quantify, but it is clear that it is higher than in hospital. Equally it is certain that anyone undertaking it should have clear instruction in the technique and a thorough understanding of all it entails. This  handbook details the procedures, drugs and algorithms used by the crews of the Great North Air Ambulance who have been providing this life saving intervention since 2004. It draws on huge experience in the field and provides a spring board for any practitioner who wishes to take it on.

Reviews

From the reviews:

“This is a handbook principally for those in paramedic/ambulance corps who provide care to patients prior to hospitalization. … The authors endeavor to provide a knowledge base and guide therapy for those without a clinical experience base. The book develops technical, medical, and pharmacological concepts … . Paramedics, EMTs, or other members of first-responder teams are the intended audience. … The primary focus is the attainment of airway control. … As an academic anesthesiologist, I found this a very quick read.” (Martin Dauber, Doody’s Review Service, January, 2011)

“The authors of this handbook are anaesthetists from a military background who have developed a course for paramedics to introduce concepts of pre-hospital anaesthesia care. This book evolved from this course and is aimed at emergency physicians, other medical practitioners and paramedics … . authors are to be congratulated for making the steps to successful pre-hospital rapid sequence intubation very clear … . Cricoid pressure is well-described and many excellent tips about successful anaesthetic techniques are given.” (M. Fong, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, May, 2011)
