About this book

This book is rather unique among textbooks in vascular surgery. Most cover the surgical management of vascular diseases, in whole or in part, in standard textbook fashion, with the text organized to cover the topics methodically in a didactic manner, and supported by tables, illustrations and references. Others have special purposes, such as atlases on technique or algorithm based books on decision making. All have their place, but if the educational goals are training of the young surgeon, self-assessment and continuing medical education for the practitioner or preparation for oral examination, this book fills a special need, and fills it very well by breaking away from the didactic approach. It has long been recognized by educators that retention of knowledge, i.e. true learning, are much better achieved using the Socratic method of questions and answers, as opposed to simply reading or being told facts. In this book this approach is developed and presented in a very effective manner. In each "chapter", one is presented with a case report representing a real life scenario. The case reports-scenarios in this book together cover most of vascular surgery experience.

Reviews

From reviews of the 1st edition:

"This book is one of the first modern applications of problem-related total-learning, considering the vascular patient and his disease problem as a complex entity, requiring a well-considered and careful approach. The basic principle throughout the books is "evidence-based" medicine. The book reads easily (short chapters from 3 to 5 pages, exposing a real vascular case, followed by questions and discussion). An ideal book for self-assessment and continued medical self-education for vascular fellows and established active vascular surgeons." (Hendrik Van Damme, ActaCardiologica, 2004;59(3):361-362).

"This is a thoroughly international book with experts coming together from Rome, Los Angeles, Guilford, Denver, New South Wales, and even Brooklyn. The book should be in the libraries of teaching vascular units. Senior residents assigned to vascular surgery and fellows in vascular surgery will profit by dipping into it before going to case presentations. They will learn how to ask and sometimes even answer questions." (John Bergan, Annals of Vascular Surgery, March 2005)

"It is an applied book that aims to address the topical problems and issues experienced in vascular practice and, as such, complements many of the rather dry textbooks that exist. It is a welcome and effective aid to self learning and assessment for the senior trainee as well as being of value to the practicing vascular specialist." (J. Brittenden, The British Journal of Surgery, 2004;91(2):255.)
